Well, I took the X to the dealerhship that I purchased if from (non-Ford) to have the door locks fixed, as part of the contract. They tried replacing the relay which didn't fix the problem. In the process, they ran the battery dead and when they charged it back up, the check engine light came on and the OD light began to flash. The diagnostic machine showed about 7 codes. They tried clearing them. The truck started and idled fine, according to them, but when they tried to drive it, it barely moved. Now they are taking it to the local Ford Dealership which can't look at it until tomorrow.
According to the ford-trucks forum, the flashing OD light means there's a fault in the transmission matrix. Anyone else had this happen? Is this (hopefully) a fairly simple fix, or did they really mess things up? I'm not concerned about how much it costs, as the dealer is paying for it. I just hope they didn't mess things that will affect the truck in the future.
Cheers

Your truck is in "limp mode" stuck in 3rd gear. thats why it barely moves. if you didnt have this problem before, chances are the mechanic shorted out a fuse or relay. codes would help me give you a better idea what might have happened. sounds to me like who ever worked on your truck was not very familiar with Fords.

They obviously weren't very familiar. If they'd have listened to me in the first place and just replaced the door actuators, none of this would have happened. They are offering me a loaner Suburban. . . Joy. |

Gearman: I'll try to get the codes from them. It goes to the Ford dealer this afternoon and won't be looked at until tomorrow. |

I just called the Ford dealership and they said the 9 codes that it's showing indicate "internal and external slippage" and that the X needs a new transmission, to the tune of $3,500! The truck ran fine before I took it in to the non-Ford dealer who was only supposed to fix the door lock! |

I have never seen a bad transmission throw 9 codes That many codes usually indicates serious electrical problem, burned out computer, act of God, or someone is lying. Sounds like business is a little slow at the Ford dealer

Gearman: Thanks for the advice on the phone. When confronted with this, the dealership said, "Well, we're not for sure its the transmission; it may the throttle body which is only $500. . . "
OK, so lets see: You don't know what's wrong with the truck as it's throwing so many codes, so start with the most expensive thing the customer can put in besides an engine and work backwards from there. I don't think so.
They tried to feed me that the tranny fluid is "completely burned." Funny, it looked and smelled perfectly good to me! I own Land Rovers and other assorted British cars, so mysterious breakdowns aren't new to me. But this kind of trickery is obscene.
CROOKS!
The X was immediately loaded onto a trailer and hauled out of there. I wouldn't let these guys work on my worst enemy's Chevy. It's going to an independant 4x4 shop tomorrow.
Funny thing is, the dealership from which I purchased the X gave my wife a 2000 Suburban to drive. She HATES it. It is the same year as the X and has fewer miles, but she said it is a POS. The X is the first American car my wife has ever driven, and the Suburban the second. I think she's now an official Ford fan.
The codes are as follows:
PO743 (or 745 -- can't read the writing)
PO750
PO751
P1747
P1754
P1760
PO433
PO135
PO155
Updates to follow.

P0743---Torque converter clutch system electrical
P0745---Pressure control solenoid problem
P0750---Shift solenoid A problem
P0751---Shift solenoid A performance stuck off
P1747---EPC solenoid circuit failure or short
P1754---Coast clutch circuit failure- high or low amp load
P1760---EPC solenoid circuit shorted or open
Po433---Heated Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshholf--Bank 2
P0135---02 sensor heater circuit problem--Bank 1 Sensor 1
p0155---02 Sensor heater circuit problem--Bank 2 sensor 1
This sounds like an electrical problem (maybe EEC Relay). I would clear codes, drive it and see how many codes come back. I think maybe someone stuck a screwdriver in thewrong place and zapped something.

Gearman. Thanks for the codes. I just called the shop and they said it was a blown fuse. The X is on its way back to town as we speak. Funny how Ford wanted to put a $3,600 tranny in to fix a 15 cent problem.
Can't wait to get the X back and turn in the Suburban.
Door locks still aren't fixed. I think I'll ask the dealership from which I purchased it if they can just purchase the parts and I'll do it myself. I don't want anyone else touching the X for a while!
A very special thanks to Gearman for your help!

I would be very tempted to write a letter to the Attorney General, with a copy to Ford regional and the dealer. Either they are incompetent or trying to pull something illegal. Lay out all of the facts and keep the opinions to a minimum, and use the words "formal complaint". Even if nothing ultimately comes of it, it will cetainly draw some attention units from both Ford and the AG.
