My ABS light is on steady, overdrive light flashes, and speedometer doesn't work. All fuses check OK. Transmission seems to shift at normal speeds. I hate to take this to the local Ford dealer 'cause I'm out of warranty and they have a habit of over-charging. Any ideas?

When you drive it next, watch your speedo and see if it does anything weird. I'm willing to bet it's probably your $12 speed sensor in your rear diff. It's an easy fix if that's what ends up as the problem.

The speedometer works sometimes. Othertimes it's dead. Does this sound like it's the sensor on the rear diff?

I think we hit it on the the head. I picked one up from the Ford Dealer when same thing happened to me. Like I said, it was about $12 at the dealer and was a piece of cake to install.

Thanks Kevin, you're correct. A new speed sensor on top of the rear diff fixed the problem.
A quick fix but the local ford dealer charged $26.

You guys are good! I have found that a lot of enthusiasts have more knowledge about their trucks than a lot of so called techs.

10 years ago we could still do our own diagnosing! Even on computer controlled cars we could pull the codes using a 12V light and a jumper wire (Fords) or just a paperclip (Chebby) and then fix it ourselves. For todays you have to buy those expensive readers and even then it's just a code reader...doesn't do all of the neat stuff the dealer's tools can.
