True! How true! Maybe it's a case of the vehicle computers being over-engineered? Maybe we've gone away from mechanics and now dealers are employing "technicians"? Maybe it's a little of both.

Sad thing is, even with all of this fancy gadgetry they don't seem to be able to diagnose a vehicle right in front of them as well as someone can 3000 miles away on this board.

Makes you wonder what things would be like for many owners if boards like this didn't exist.

I was having some strange happenings with my '02 Excursion (V10 4x4) (Radio dead, A/C dead, Blinking O/D light, Airbag & Brake light on). They all came back to life after a stop. I don't know that anyone else experienced this many abnormalities, but from some of the posts here it looked like it might be the Output Speed Sensor. I pulled the codes with a borrowed unit from AutoZone and I think it confirmed the problem (it may use different numbering system, but it said "P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor A Malfunction".)

I went to my Ford dealership down here in San Diego and asked for an
"output speed sensor" (as I saw it referred to here). From what I understand it mounts on top of the rear differential. The parts guy didn't seem to be sure of what he was giving me, and I'm worried that I ended up with the wrong part (he mentioned an ABS speed sensor). It was about the right price though - $24.10. Would any of you know what the part number is that I need? The part that he gave me is part # F85Z2L373AC. Is this the correct one? I haven't crawled under there
yet, but would you have any tips for the installation? I think I read that it's just 1 or 2 bolts and a wire connector. I looked in a Chilton's but I don't see any reference to it.

Thanks for your helpful posts and for any other help you may have on this!
