When i got my X i noticed the usuall wander in the steering. When i did my first oil change i gave it a lube and noticed some of the wander disappeared. I noticed recently that the X wanders more than before and when i did my oil change i found my grease gun broken. I will pick up another this weekend. Have any of you people noticed what i did? Have i become a demented old codger?(don't answer that). I will lube the X next week and see.

Mike, let us know about the greasing. If you don't mind me asking a non-x question as I have seen you advocate gear changes for performance improvement. I have a 98 f150 4.6, 4wd, powerdyne supercharger, cat back exhaust. Combo runs well, but has always lacked bottom end. Currently have factory 3.73 ring and pinion. I am considering a 4.3 front and rear with an electric locker for deep snow. I don't know if this combo will be worth the $ and I don't know the effect on the highway rpm. Most of my driving is 65mph and less. I live at high altitude in mountainous terain. Your thoughs would be appreciated.
ps. are there worth while improvements to be had on the transmission side?

Gearman - I don't think your nuts, probably just very sensitive to the way your truck feels and handles like a alot of us on this forum. Full greas fittings would make sens that there would be less slop. I try to keep mine full. I just wish the truck had about nine more like my Lancruiser: every u-joint, slip joints, steering knuckles, etc..

i agree about the grease fittings. the main reason you dont have grease fittings in your u-joints is that it weakens them because they are hollow.( one less liability).

Phill
i dont know whether spending the money on the diffs is worth it. it most defenitely will help a lot bringing the RPMs in quicker to allow your blower boost to work sooner (that is a problem with centrifical blowers, they are like turbos working better in the upper ranges not down low where a truck needs it). there are a lot of things we can do in the transmission to make it stronger but not help power with a 4.6. a twin screw blower like Kenne Bel would help low end a lot, but thats a lot of money. gears with a locker would probably run 1500.00 or so. maybe it's the way to go.

Thanks Gearman, I'd like to buy a transmission kit from you. Your shop is too far for me to travel, so I would like to try the installation myself if you think that is doable. $1500 is about what I thought for the other. What ratio do you think would be best?
Thanks again, Phil |

Maybe I am the one that is nuts. My wife and I don't notice the wander in our X. I've driven it from Cleveland to Maine and back two times and just don't feel this problem. Also, I do grease the fittings but, have not noticed a difference before or after. Even after reading the forums and trying to find the wandering, I don't. Maybe I have the perfect alignment, or maybe it is good enought that I can't tell otherwise. |

I have not seen any wandering either and its something I hate.
And I have not noticed any difference after a greasing either.
Wife had an explorer that liked to wander to the left. Ford dealer tried too and never did fix it. We got rid of it and bought a focus just to spite them.
Dave.
