I have a local off road shop that swears by the Volant systems. On there website the vehicle cas study is the F150/Expedition 5.4L V8. They are claiming to to get 18 HP and 40 FT. Pretty impressive numbers. I will run right out and get one if these numbers are even close to being acurrate. Since the V10 is so close tohte V8 from a design standpoint it would stand to reason that it should be similare. Does any one have one on their X.

My buddsy has it on his Expedition along with a exhast adn the Hypertech programmer. The whole package is awesome on his SUV. He (with a smaller trailer) pulls me on the hills when towing.

Again does anyone have any experieince with these intakes. I was told they are former K&N guys whose ideas was not get put to good use.

Let me know if you have an oppinion...like that's a hard thing to find here....someone with and OPPINION!

I have been proved wrong....I guess no one has an oppinion....

Let the record show that this may be a first in this forum. I still welcome any feedback on all types of intakes.

David
I have never seen an air intake on a gas engine even come close to the numbers you claim unless there is a supercharger involved. I have done a lot of this kind of work for many years and spent a lot of time on dynos. Example: My '99 Mustang Cobra dynoed 275 rear wheel horsepower at the wheels. I changed the exhaust from 2 and one quarter inch to less restrictive 2 and one half inch, free flow mufflers and cold air intake with KN filter. The Cobra dynoed at 282 rear wheel horsepower after that. Custom chip was then burned on the dyno and we wound up with 290 rear wheel horsepower. So, i gained 15 horsepower which is the norm for this kind of mod.

Thanks for the input gearman. I was curious. It claims these number right in their marketing and on there website. I am skeptical too.

I did end up putting it on and it seems to rev quick in the mid to high end. Seat of the pants feelin is positive...not phenominal. All in all it is a step in the "doable mods for the money"

Always appreciate your feedback and insight.

I would have to disagree with most of the in this thread. I had a 2003 Expedition with the 5.4L V8, and I was the first owner of the Volant intake in the United States for this particular vehicle (by accident). I was also skeptical about the claimed HP gains claimed by Volant, but I became a believer after installing it. You will receive the claimed HP gains with their closed boxed system on a 03-05 5.4L Expedition, but not on a 5.4 V8 Excursion and this is why:

1. The 03-05 Expedition's has a closed intake system that includes a tube with direct access to outside cooler (denser) air. Volant takes advantage of this fresh air source in their 03-04 Expedition design.

2. The 5.4 V8 Excursion's OEM intake system is designed differently. Volant was unable to design a closed box system that would take advantage of the cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay on our vehicles. So what they did was design an "open" intake design that greatly increases the flow of air overall (better than any other aftermarket intake system) since there was no way to reach an outside source of cold air.

Therefore you will still receive "large gains" in HP with the Volant system (probably more than any other system out there) but you will not receive the 18 HP that other vehicle with the 5.4L V8 receive.

I highly recommend the Volant system as the only person so far on this thread that has actually owned a Volant intake on a 5.4L V8. I would say go for it is definitely worth the extra couple of bucks! I am personally getting ready to order one for my 5.4L "X"

Hope this helped.

Hi David,
I was out of pocket for a while or I would have responded

Any increase in cold air flow would logically seem to help, but the devil is in the details...

Does the "Zoodad" mod really help ?
I don't know of anyone that did any true before and after testing...
and do we KNOW the ram air effect is any better with it ? I shrug my shoulders to that as well since I don't know....

I mean, I did the zoodad mod on 2 X's and have had NO adverse effects in over three years...
it was an easy day project which I enjoyed doing on a nice spring day... and THAT may be the only benefit

After all, the blunt front end of the X may create a pressure wave that makes the air flow AWAY from the opening I cut in the radiator support and not into it??? but we try those freebies !!!

Until wind tunnel testing (or I talk my wife into riding on the front bumper to blow smoke in front of it while at speed !) who REALLY knows. ...

Does the Volant work on even the excursion ?
without proper wind tunnel testng THEY won't know what it's like at speed either...
(hard to get a dynometer moving at 60 mph down the highway )

but I too think the volant has the best design...
