I'm such a retard !!!! I mean it does not WANT to start NOW that the temperature has dropped below 40 deg!!!! Ok, I just bought her 3 months ago, have not had a problem until now. Since the outside temperature has dropped below 40 deg, it doesn't want to start. If I wait for the "wait to start" light to go out It won't hit a lick. It turns over fine just keeps cranking and puffing out smoke. Now if I try to start it immediatly, by not waiting for the "wait to start" light to go out, it will fire for an instant like it wants to start, If I do this a couple of times it will eventually start. But if I go back and try to start it, waiting for "wait to start" light to go out, it will never even try to start. Just cranks and puffs smoke. Where should I start looking? Glow Plugs? Relay? Fuel Filter? Etc!?. Oh I have an '02 Excursion Diesel 36024 miles. Those 24 extra miles made me cringe when it started doing this!!!!!

I'd start at batteries...
Autozone can check them for you.....
and those aren't warranty items anyway...
Good Luck...

The Diesel can be a bit stubourn to start below -16C if your oil is still 15w40. Ford recomends 10w30 below 30F Which is convienient in some ways but you should not have any problem with either at 40F.
I had one battery begin to die on me last winter and it finaly bit the dust in september this year. Tinkerbell was made in 00.
Sounds like the glow plugs are not getting warm enough. I have been told that they can draw around 70 Ampers so your battery has to be up to snuff. You would notice if the batteries are starting to lag when you try to start it. If it does not turn over with lots of zip it will be a hard starter and a good indication that at least one battery is not happy. If you have a nice warm garage to bring it in and warm it up this might provide a pointer towards the problem if the truck starts ok, as it should if its warm, Even without glow plugs. 40F should not even remotely be a problem.
Dave.

I see what you guys are saying but it turns over fine, it just won't start. like it is flodded. I tried it this morning, waited for the "wait to start" light to go out then cranked, It just kept cranking like a gas engine with no spark or fuel. It puffs out a lot of smoke and never tries to start. I then turned the ignition off then back on and tried to start it immediately, without waiting for the "wait to start" light to go out. It started right up!!!! uggggggg! Any ideas?

STILL check your batteries. I had the same problem with my F250. I seemed to crank fine but one of the batteries was ka-put and it wouldn't start - same symptoms you described. I replaced the bad battery and VOILA! started without a problem. Until then, charge the glow plugs until the light goes out then charge them again.

Ok, I'll check the batteries, but in the meantime I used my programmer to run the codes and it came up with a P0380- malfunction with glow plug circuit-A. Does this help any? What is Circuit-A? and Could this still be one of the batteries. And I know I am asking alot but what seems to be the best service manual to repair one of these beasts?
Thanks again guys, I'm glad I found this site.

Food for thought... you have 2 relays that sit in the engine valley, They look like the starter relay that you would find on any other Gas ford. These have been known to get flaky. They are what helps provide power to the Glow plugs.... Until you can check it out I would suggest plugging in your block heater ...this will greatly aid in theose Cool/cold morning start ups. in-case you don't know where the plug is ...Look behing the front bumper nest to or near where the tow hooks/fog lights are, you should see a plug hanging loosely. Let us know what you find out. |

Not sure if this will help, but I had a similar problem with mine. Engine would crank, but no dice. Sometimes it would start and run for less than a minute and then die, then it wouldn't start at all. Took it to Ford and they replaced a sensor, I think the Transducer sensor (part # F7TZ*12K073*A)? Our '00 X has 75K miles on it but they said the sensor was still under warranty...wierd. We just had to pay a $100 deductible (nickle and dime you to death). Hope this helps...it fixed my problem after I'd already replaced one of the batteries (it needed it anyway).
