What is the difference in mercon and mercon 5? What kind of synthetic transmission fluid is out there for the 4r100 transmission. I have a 2000 X and am getting ready to change the fluid and just wanted to know what would be better than what ford puts in It.

Mercon fluid is a Ford approved fluid that has a lot of similaritiies with Dexron 111 which is a GM approved fluid. Most shops like mine carry a Deron111 Mercon blend which works for almost all cars and trucks. Mercon V has more synthetic in it than regular Mercon. Ford can not give you a straught answer as to what car or truck should take Mercon V. (especialy since Amsoil beat them up pretty good in court). Most transmission fluids have a lot of synthetics in them, Mercon V has more. (i dont like the stuff because nobody knows what it's good for including Ford). I became an Amsoil dealer to cover my butt because i do a lot of high performance work on Ford diesels and the GM Duramax. After saying all of that, and my experiences lately with some killer trucks; Mobil 1 can not be beat. I have found that Mobil 1, Amsoil, or TranSynd(Castrol fluid for Allisons) can drop transmission temps by 20-30 degrees under load. My X runs the Mercon/Dexron blend because i dont tow; if i did i would have Mobil 1, Fords V10 cooler, and a deeper pan.
