Coming from the drivers side front. Thought it was the brakes. Not so. Took it to the local brake store they said it could be the front axle. Got 51k on it. Does anyone know if this is covered by ford? Any one else seen this problem before. For example I can jack up the front of the EX and spin the front (drivers-side) wheel by hand and it sound like a baloon loosing air. A squealing type sound.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey, neighbor on the Southside!

Sounds like you've got a bearing going bad. My ex-girlfiend's 2000 EB 2WD Explorer had her front bearings go on her within the last year ... at about 34K miles.

Maybe Ford got a little too skimpy with the grease in 2000?

I have the same truck and have also heard this sound. I dont think its a bearing because it dosent do it all the time. I hear it after going from 4wd back to 2wd. And not all the time. I have had the truck on the rack and can hear it coming from both front wheels. Its hard to hear it coming from the right side while you're driving and listening out the side window. I think it has something to do with the hubs not completely disengageing. Thats just a guess. Its done it for about 20K miles. I have 53K on mine now.

If anyone knows more about this let us know.

Thanks

If it sound like air leaking then it could be a hub problem. Although the air is just a pulse to get the hub to lock/unlock.

Sounds like you're gonna have to take it apart and have a looksee. Make sure you... That's the best way to fix things.

ANyway...another thing Coach, when you spin it is the caliper on or off? Try take the caliper off and see if the sound persists. That'll help narrow down the causes.

I have had this trouble checked and re-checked. Nobody seems to know what it is. Is there anything in the front axle that could cause this? It sounds like it is coming from the bearings to me. Two places say it is not lokiely the bearings. Maybe I should just change them and see. Any other thoughts??

Oink! Oink! Squeal! Squeal!

The bearings are sealed unit bearings. You can change them tou but they run around $300. Lot of money to determine IF it is the cause.

You had a brake shop look at it....did they remove all the pieces they could to rule out the brakes as the cause?

BAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

A buddy of mine that repairs Cat Tractors told me that Ford's F-250 (his company has several) bearings are known for going bad. He said that if the Excursions use the same bearings than they could be bad...don't know if this is correct or not...He also said that the only place you could get replacement bearings is from Ford and the price is about $300 just like Monsta said...
