NewB here, I am looking to get a X to tow my junk, and was just wondering if there is a certian year I should look for or stay away from. I have seen a 6,000 mile '03 6.0 for 32,000.00 at a local (Reputable) used car dealer. But was wondering if I should et a 7.3 or hold out for a '04 model. Thanks Murfman

If you are going to be hauling heavy junk,.........in excess of 6000lbs often and dont live in the flatlands, you may want to consider a 7.3 as you can overhaul the 4r100 tranny and beef it up substantially where as the 6.0l and new 5speed auto have no aftermarket beefup products available. If youre towing occassionally and nothing heavy, go for the 6.0 as it is quieter and a little more grunt in stock form.

Thanks for the reply. My wife is going to drive it to work, and it is going to be the "Family Truckster" for extended vacations, towing my 98 TJ or my 95 ZJ trail rigs. I am always buying JUNK and moving it from here to there, and the Wife just wrecked our 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9. I want something bigger (Safer!) for her to drive. Any Model year differences I should be aware of? How much does it usually cost to "Bulletproof" the trans? I have rebuilt Mopar trannies before, so I would not have a problem tackling the Trans myself. Thanks Again Murfman

There really werent any major changes other then investigating current Ford TSB's(service bulletins) From 2000 to 2003 until the introduction of the 6.0 PSD and 5spd tranny. Things like gas pedal, radiator, driving/fog lamps and other small differences occurred over the 3 years.

As far as bullet proof tranny. You can only get upgrade parts for the 4R100E and not the new 5 speed. You are looking at a whole tranny from Suncoast for around $2000 and Torque Converter for $1300 and dont forget a MagHytec tranny pan for $300. Not sure what the Transgo kit costs to do it yourself, but you better be a very experienced tranny guy to manipulate all the necessary components in the 4R100E in order to bullet proof it. The torque converter is going to be expensive no matter what as a stock converter will fail soon with heavy towing.

Good Luck

Listen to cwbyinjeep, I have found him very experienced in the automotive field and he nows his stuff about the X. I have learned from him as i have learned from many people on this board. Seems to me that enthusiasts that have researched and done their homework (that's you good people) know more about their product than the dealer or any tech.
