Well,

on the 4x4 models it has one ton running gear. A sterling 10.25 is one ton right? and on 2002 and new models it has the D60 kingpin front, which seems like a one ton to me. A D50 is more like a 3/4 ton. I dunno, its a mix i suppose.

You can have a 3/4 ton ford f-250 say from 94 and it will have what a 9.75 rear end with a D 50 TTB up front?

Pretty sure there still 3/4 tons if 4X4 or not. The only difference should be the straight front axle in the 4X4's. All I know is that a 94 Super duty would have the independant front suspension more similiar to a newer Chevy or GMC wether it's a 4X4 or 4X2. Ford and Dodge have straight front axle 4x4's, while the GM trucks have the independant in all there super duty trucks.
I would really be surprised if my wifes 2000 4X4 X has anything one ton on it, plus it would then have one ton plates wouldn't it? You may be able to order an X with the larger one ton axles but this would be rare and costly to do.

Next question;

Assuming the X is around 3/4 ton rated and comparing it to the 3/4 ton Suburban,
the X is about 7" longer, but what is causing the X to weigh ~2000 more pounds
than a Suburban ?

What are some of the pros/cons of X over Suburban to justify the extra weight ?

I'm not an expert on these vehicles, I just want to get a grasp of what is
going on.

Ok, a D50 front is found on both 3/4 ton and One ton F-series trucks. Same with the D60, which I beleieve is a better front axle than the D50. Secondly, the 10.25 sterling is also used in both 3/4 ton and One ton trucks, one tons typically have duals on it. The trannys are the same and same with the motors.

But, your in a SUV. Thats why you dont need plates in strict states like Mass. Your not in a truck, which is the biggest difference. And, trucks are rated either 3/4 ton or One ton for load capacity not like an SUV.

So, yes the Excursion is a one ton or a 3/4 ton with regards to running gear. You really cant put bigger axles in there, D60 front and 10.25 rear is mighty huge.

AFAIK, the only difference between the 3/4-ton and the 1-ton is the load of the springs.

Actually the wheelbase of the regular cab is the same as an Excursion. The SC SB is longer.

The Excursion and all Super Duty's ('cept the dually) where a Sterling 10.5 out back and a D60 up front. The D50 was there up until 02 when it was changed out. The duallys always have worn a D60 up front (4wd only) and D80 out back.

The Ex is more a 3/4 ton than anything not that any of that really makes a difference. Only because it comes with those woosey springs. But it shares many of the same driveline and frame components with it's heavier duty siblings. So call it either but see the last sentance here first.

Stronger frame, more body and serious axles.

Cons - Reduced payload and rated towing capacity.
Pros - more stable tow vehicle due to longer wheel base.
Cons - Less agile.
Pros - More room.

Sure there are more but that's all I could think of right now...

Lastly, tires play a very big part of the 3/4 - 1 ton thing. Exs come with D-rated. A 1 ton truck comes with E-rated. Put E-rated tires and swap the springs from an F250/350 (rears are the same) and you'll have a 1-ton, I guess...

Ok I guess it's closer to a one ton that a 3/4 ton acording to the axles it wears. I remember a Ford delear a few years back say the front axles on the 4X4's were the same on 3/4 and one tons but the rear had more leaf springs on the one ton.
So my two Ford vehicles would have the Dana50 front and Sterling 10.25 (99F250/2000X both 4X4)?
GM may be putting the Duramax in the Suburban so until then Ford rules the SUV world!!! Even if they do Ford still has them on the axles and size.
