For the most part, the leaf springs are the limiting factor. While different axles AND BRAKES have differing weight ratings, the X's weak leaf springs make it closer to a 1/2-ton truck, even though it's built on the SuperDuty chassis. Just look at the X's low payload capacity ... it simply was not designed to carry the same loads as the SD trucks ... the X is basically an overgrown station wagon ... albeit a very nice station wagon.

My .02. The Excursion is a one ton truck with 3/4 ton capacity due to the extra body weight.

FYI on a few pieces of info I have seen posted incorrectly on this thread. First the Superduties have a Sterling 10.5" rear end which is a very small improvement from the Sterling 10.25 of the 97 and older F-series 3/4 & 1 ton trucks. They actually share the same carrier, but have a bigger R&P along with a few other minor differences. Secondly the X is shorter then an Extended cab/Short bed Superduty. I know this as I had an F350 Shortbed/Extended cab and the exhaust was about 8 inches too long for the X when I went to swap them over.

As for the increased weight of the X over the Suburban, consider if you are comparing 4x4 to 4x4 and the PSD does not compare to any of the motors Chevy offers as far as overall wieght is concerned. The PSD is heavy. The X w/PSD is easily rated as a 3/4 ton in load capacity and 1 ton all the way in towing ability. I even prefer the towing characteristics of the X because its extra cab wieght helps bully heavy bumper pull trailers around.

I had a '99 SD SuperCab and I could swear it was longer than my X. I know the X turns on a dime compared the pick-em-up.

I never thought I would ever see this phrase in reference to the X. I love em but they suck in turning radius..... Unless it's the worlds largest dime!!!
