I am new to the site, but not new to Ford SD trucks and Fords. I am, however shopping for my first PSD X. I have found an 02 4X4 LTD, with 27K on it, a lease turn in vehicle. I need to know what kind of negotiating power I have. I am walking in with cash in hand, and the Ford Dealer is at $29,900. Is there a chance I could walk out of there for $27K out the door? I have seen 02 V-10 trucks with under 45K miles, for anywhere from $24K to $27K. This truck is flawless, and I want it, but $27K is my resonable limit.

Carsdirect.com shows a brand new 2003 limited V10 4WD for under $36k.
Ebaymotors has a 2002 for 'buy it now' for $23.9k.

Offer $24k and let them talk you up worst case. /hehe

Paying cash can work against you because they would rather finance you to
make extra profit in finance charges.

If it was me, I would go in there and mention you may need to finance
the vehicle, then start the haggle process. When a price
is reached and they want you to do the financing, at the last minute,
write a check. /hehe

Book (last year) was 28,075.

I'm sure they paid less than that. I'd offer 26K to start the process OR just tell them you want it for 27K out the door and let them know that you are prepared to leave with it NOW.

December is a good time to buy. Especially next week (mid-week). Salesmen, like myself, are more willing to "talk" and "submit".

Ron-
When I read your post I couldn't believe what I was reading. That exact same day my wife gave me the "thumbs up" on buying a PSD 4X4 Excursion. We then worked out the money to the exact same amount you had-- $27,000. We can't go a penny more. I've also seen alot of 2002 models at $29,900.
So my big question is- did it work? What method did you go with? Start at $26,000 and come up, or did you tell them $27,000 was the absolute tops you could go? I'd like to hear if they accepted your offer becuase I'm going to start calling people next week.
Let me know if you are a new Excursion owner!

Well, sat down with the dealer this morning. He kept saying how "huge" that truck books out for. They have it in the paper for $31,900, and the best I could work them down to was $28,500. I started at $26000 and my truck, and I walked up to$27,000, but I won't go more than that for it, even though it is a real nice truck. I had my 96 Yukon sold for $7500, but they guy backed out, so I brought the Yukon in with me this morning for a look over by the dealer. My payoff on the Yukon is $5830, and they offered me $6000 for it, and it is a very nice truck, BUT it has 150K+ on it. I still think I can sell it for at least $7000, there are a lot of good miles left in that truck, I am not going to give it away. But I left the door open and they 'want' to get me in that Excursion, or so they say. Hey it's Christmas, they might take my $27000 offer and give me a new truck for X-Mas.

Sounds like my experience today. All the trucks at $29,900 were sold over the weekend. I moved up to the group at $32,500 to see how much they would move. They came down to $29,500. I know it is only $400 less than the original price of the original truck, but this new truck has a lot fewer miles and is pretty clean.
Unfortunatly $27,000 is still my limit. I guess if I wait 6 months, the price should come down, and my savings should go up. I really wanted one now!
