Shifting problem just started with my 00 "X", 7.3 PSD, 4X4. Once the engine is warm (sometimes when first started), it is shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd gear. This is only happening when I am on it a little and the RPM's are around 2500 before the shift. Once the RPM's are above 2500, it clanks into gear and drops to about 1700 RPM. The rest of the gears shift fine and normal, no problems. I have an appointment on Monday, 29 Dec to take it to the local Ford dealership for a cmputer scan. I am afraid that since there are not any "dummy" lights on the dash, the computer will not read anything. The truck is not chipped or has any performance stuff added. I have about 96K on it and take the family camping by towing a 31 ft. Jayco Eagle trailer. This problem just started and I didn't have anything behind me. Any similiar problems or possible solutions before I take it to the dealership. P.S. The transmission fluid was last changed at 64k and I have an appointment to get it done again next week. Thanks for your time!

I'd wait and see what happens after the fluid change.

Although you have more than enough miles on your trans for it to be worn out, you still may have an electrical problem. A scan will tell us something( do not need an SES light to set a code). Changing trans fluid is not a good idea untill problem is diagnosed.

Gearman, thanks....I was hoping to see your post sometime on this. Do you suggest that it needs to go to the dealer for a scan? Also, sounds like from the forum reading that this is a weak point in the truck. I love the truck and don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. Where can I go search for more information on the transmission? I also see the Suncoast transmission backed up by you and others. What makes this transmission superior to the rest? Thanks.

There was a recall re this issue in that year, you can complain to ford about your problem.

4R100's are not know for going 150k miles no matter how well you maintane them and that's a fact. They have the weakest torque converter in the industry (which will fail quickly if you tow) and they use the same converter in the 6.0 5R110 transmission. Ford has not learned anything yet. I think the recall you speak of was for the second gear diode and i don't think it still in effect.

In my mind the Torque converter and transmission are 2 seperate machanical parts. Yes the Torque converter is the greatest point of failure in any drivetrain.
The new converter in the 5R110 is improved and reworked to handle the additional torque and HP coming from the 6.0L in addition the new converter has a lower stall speed @ 1200 rpm giving the 4R100 400 rpm more to grap that torque from the 7.3.

We have these converters cut open here. I bought a couple when they first came out. I saw no difference in pitch angle of the fins. Stator looked pretty much the same. Same pathetic triple clutch (lining is one half inch wide). Transgo has a couple of 5R110 converters cut open as well and they found the same thing i did. These converters are weak, no better than their 4R100 counterpart. They even cost less than the 4R100 converter. The stall is slightly lower( i personaly don't feel the difference). There was a lot of hype about this converter a while ago on the Dieselstop.com started by that guy Evans from Ford. I have had a few people come into my shop after they had them installed and said they felt no difference.

I just talked to Bob Riley from Dieselstop.com now merged with Piers Diesel in WA, and he feels that the torque converter is better. I talked to the local for dealer and my diesel mechanic agrees. Maybe there just saying with what there were trained to believe like me now. If they are the pathetic converter you say the are, what converter do you recommend? I have my dealer replacing my rear main seal and changing out the converter (for free) at the same time next week. My mods are extensive, and concerned about this. I did have my eye on a triple lock converter by Performance Auto (http://www.partshp.com/Converters.htm) 3/4 down on page the 18X. Their claim to fame: This converter is the best Power Stroke converter money can buy (standard on diesel Enforcer). This is a full 13 inch converter, it will handle anything you have (6 lugs only). Cost $629.00, why pay more, sold elsewhere for $1175.00 to $1370.00. What is you thought?

I am not familiar with that converter but i can tell you i don't like the six studs sticking out, i prefer six bolts.(if you want to break something, make it longer). I prefer Suncoast converters, they are strong and i personaly use one. I have installed many, no complaints, and their product support is the best. The converter you showed me might be good, i dont know, but i'll bet its better than a Ford 5R110. I also would not be so hot to trot on a triple disc, they are having notching issues due to the rattling of the clutches in the converter.
