Strictly based on the 03 engine I would pass. There have been many 03's that have been good, but at the same time, that has been the most problematic year for the 6.0, so it seems.

96F250,PSD,SC,LWB,4X4,lots of mods
89F150,4.9,RC,LWB,4X4,engine mods only

Are you desperate for the new?

Save the greif and find a really good used 02-03 with the 7.3. There is talk about a 6.0 recall

I'm considering buying a 2000 - 2002 diesel excursion. Does anyone have any opinions on which year is the best buy?

Go with a 2002 if your wallet can afford it. Less mileage and the quarks have been fixed that were known 00'-01'.
