We purchased a used 2000 X PSD with 60K miles in June last year. All great with exception of unexplained electrical weirdness (we have nicknamed the X "Christine" after the car in the Stephen King book). Early issue (not too serious but annoying): after washing with power sprayer, radio stays powered but no sound when not in Park or Neutral and SES light comes on. Took X to auto electronis specialist (X not under warranty). They found some corroded grounds and cleaned them up. GEM module checked out fine. Latest issue (Serious problem): walked outside 2 weeks ago after returning from skiing (no problems on trip) and having washed X with power spray. Found X cranking itself with no key in ignition and no person in vehicle! Didn't start, but ran batteries down to dead trying. Recharged batteries and drove to same auto electronics specialist. Speedo dead, SES light on, Overdrive Off light flashing. They replaced the GEM module. Took X skiing last Friday, no problems on trip. Washed with power spray. No sound from radion on trip home from wash and Overdrive Off light flashing. Went out 2 hours later, inserted key and turned to 'On' to wait for glo plug warm up. X tried to crank over in the 'On' position. Also, no interior light. When started and running it sounds like the starter is still trying to engage. Had X towed to same auto electronic specialist today. Any ideas or similar situations encountered? I love the X, but this is getting ridiculous and expensive. May need to fix and get out from under this vehicle. |

Stop washing it with a power sprayer!! Or at least find out where the water is leaking in!

It would really be something to see the X on Ski's. I have not tried it yet but it must be wicked neat.
Seriously though, I wonder if the ignition key assembly has anything to do with it.
Without looking thru the wiring book I cant think of anything else where it could do the cranking thing.
As long as the fuel pump stays off, it won't start thankfully.
Do post back and let us know if anyone finds the secret.
Dave. |

Also, Stop washing it with a power sprayer as mentioned above!! All those issues are controlled by the ECM (Truck Computer) just behind the fire wall and mounted by your left foot. Check the wireing harness and the bolt (in engine compartment just under the master cylinder) holding the harness on at the firewall. This bolt in known to back out comeing loose and moisture to get in. If the ECM gets any mositure it will cause simular poblems i.e. starting with no key, alarm going off no reason, injectors firing irratically, low boost, transmisson OD flashing.
engine defueling(rough) etc.
