Hi from the new guy. I have been a GM person my whole life but, after the second rear end on my 2000 yukon XL I give up. I pull a trailer about six times a year, a FOUR place snowmobile trailer heavy steel enclosed total weight 5500 Lbs. Total miles 5000 a year I thoght a 1/2 ton suv sould do this but it won't. I don't care for the 3/4 ton Yukon or the 8.1 motor. Here are the real questions I'm looking at a 2001 X limited with 54000 miles and the V10 is there anything that i need to look at close with this unit. Will this unit workl for my trailer needs and what can I expect for milage with this pulling the trailer I talked about before. Looking forward to your input.

P.S. This is not a daily driver for me

You can look forward in spending $$$ for fuel. If your towing average is less than 10mpg in the V10. A friend of mine tanks up every other day where I (diesel) usually go a full week about 600+ miles a tank.

Now if you can deal with Diesel, that's to way to go. Average 13.5/15.5 75 mph and diesel fuel is cheaper than most gas these day's.

Tom, I have a 2000 Limited V10 and I am very pleased with it. I get about 11 to 12 mpg around town and another mpg or two on the highway. I occaisionally pull a horse trailer weighing 6-7000 pounds and I get 10 mpg. Since your trailer has a much lower profile (and therefore much less drag) than mine, I expect you would get another 0.5 mpg more than me while pulling your trailer.

I've had little to no trouble with mine. But things you might want to check.... brakes! Is this X still on the original rotors? If a brake job is near, I'd suggest aftermarket. I use ART brakes and they are far superior to OEM. Rotor warp has been a problem with the X, but many attribute it to over-torqued lugs. Ford did change the torque specs on the lugs. Door lock actuators seem to be a problem for some. If you can check the service history of the X, it would be an advantage.

If you do buy the vehicle, I'd suggest a transmission service.... flush and replace the fluid, including the torque converter. Others have seen great improvement with replacement of shocks and installing a Hellwig sway bar on the rear. Ford added a sway bar (in 2002 I think).

Good luck on your decision. I think you'll love the X.

Hi, Tom. You will be pleased with an Excursion relative to any half-ton vehicle when it comes to towing due to the heavier components.

Regarding the engines, the V10 will handle your job with no problems. The diesel will pull your trailer faster and get better mileage. What it comes down to is how often will you use it and what are you willing to pay. You said that this is not your daily driver. If you only start it two or three times a month, the V10 would be a better choice. It will get lower mileage, but you won't have to worry about fuel gelling and/or algae growing in the fuel. If you drive it a few times a week, you might want to consider the diesel. Some guys just like having one and like the sound. Some don't want to hear the sound. Both engines are good and have their merits. I would not hesitate to buy a used V10. Mine had 46,000 miles on it when I got it and it has been great. I get 11-12 mpg in mixed driving. I would test drive the GM 8.1. It will probably be a different animal compared to the V10. Either would serve your needs.

Just a thought, if you don't need the passenger space of the X, consider a crew cab pickup. They can be found easier and possibly cheaper. Good luck.
