Folks,
There has been little discussion about torque converters as a whole in these forums. What I have learned in the past few day's would amaze even the strongest of hearts.
For some of you that don't already know, the weakest link of any drivetrain is the torque converter, and seems to be one of the most over looked mechanical parts in our trucks when it comes to modifications.
The stock converter is a tripple clutch design and flawed (weak) from the inception/installation. The OE unit truly can't handle the loads that we give them and largely fail prematurely.
In my mind my X's converter has been failing/slipping since the truck hit 17,000 miles as I'm getting converter shutter under full excellartion. Ford will not replace it because it is with-in specs they so say. If if they were to warranty it I probably wouldn’t use the same converter. So off I went to find a better converter, and the numbers and comments I get are scary.
I was going to install a new torqueshift converter and find out today that it's the same converter in my truck to date. So that shook me up, as I already have that one!
Anyone out there changed out their converter? How is it working? Who built it? Warranty?

Don
You need to call me. Not to buy anything from me but to set you straight on some facts. I am not here to argue with you or knock anyones product. There are alternatives to the high dollar Suncoast.By the way you have misinformation what the extra converter weight would do to the flywheel and how much horsepower they can handle.Your stockconverter(that includes the Ford 5R110 converter) is a triple lock with half inch lining on each clutch plate. Add up the square inch total on the Ford triple lock and it does not match a good single disc converter. I run a single disc converter from Suncoast(now mind you this is not a sales pitch but hard tech) with a TTS extreme race program(about 150 horsepower) and i can't make the converter slip. There are other companys that can give you what you need, i can help you; either to supply it for you or put you in direct contact with the if you choose. When you make your decision on the torque converter company, you must then discuss stall speed. Do not do the macho thing and tell them you need low stall because of all your power. Thats a big mistake. You need to tell the converter company what kind of power you really think you truck makes, what size tires, what weight you might haul, and the kind of driving you mostly do. Then, if they are good, they will build you the perfect converter. I do this for a living and am very good at it. I have tested a lot of products. If what i have said here effects you in your decision, then i did my job. Good Luck

Mike,
You are probably right with the misinformation. I'm not a drivetrain person but very machanically inclined. I try explain issues and I have been explained too.
I have no problem purchasing from you or your contacts. I just want the best converter for my application. I need your contact info. Mine is 908-256-9296.
I just eliminated the comments about the vendors to get a more non bias feedback.
Thank for your help and hope to talk in length.

I have a 00 X Limited 4X4 and the 7.3l I have a 3" down pipe and exhaust and an 80 HP chip
last April the transmission exploded at 58K miles I had the dealer replace it mostly for the 3/36 warranty they repalce the trans and convertor now at 70K miles I have a vibration in the driveline while towing the mechanic that maintains it for me says it's in the transmission,
After reading all of the posts on the problesm with the trans and conv. I wonder if it is the TC "slipping"?

Sounds like it might be the converter chattering on apply. Try this test(must use both feet) Bring the truck up to where it starts the chatter and keep it there, with your left foot, tap brake pedal and see if it goes away.(tapping brake pedal releases torque converter clutch)

Hey Mike,
Just wanted to let ya know I have decided to go with Midwest. The converter is a Billet cover tripple lock (clutch) and bolts as we talked about. The deciding factor was the concern of service.
When talking to Terry he was all hyped his converter. It was more here is my converter and we have the best. After talking to folks I hear Terry's service is tough to deal with.
Dennis at Midwest Converters really walked me through what I needed and what suited my needs. Your right about a good true manufacture, they will ask who, what, where and how.
