New Excursion owner and brand new to this forum as of today. I own a 2001 Limited with V10, 4.3 LS, and 37,000 miles on it. Awesome rig and I am just getting into setting up the way I like. Today was the first time its been driven in about a week due to a winter storm around town. When we fired it up the oil pressure/teperature warning light lit up and the oil pressure read zero. Just as I turned around the light went out and the oil pressure kicked up to normal. I kind of suspect the oil pressure sending unit but wondered if any of you had seen anything like this.

BTW - great forum! I have enjoyed many of the threads...

Okay...time for questions.

1. What was the outside temp?
2. What oil are you using?
3. What filter are you using?
4. Has it done it since?
5. Exactly how long was the low oil light on after start up?
6. Does it do it every time or just the first start of the morning?

Answers:

1) 43 degrees. But had just followed a week of teens and twenties where the vehicle had not been used.
2) 5w-20.
3) Milgard-mo2??? Whatever Jiffy lube tossed in there.
4) No, but not been used much. Will go out today.
5) The light was on about 4 minutes.
6) Just the once so far.

It is my understanding that the gauges are little more than an idiot light themselves - not a real reflection of actual pressure. Is this true?

David, welcome to the site. You might want to consider putting in a good synthetic like Mobil 1 or the like. I use Motorcraft 5W30, but I also start the X almost every day. If it is going to sit for a while, especially in cold temperatures, synthetics might help your cause due to faster pumping at low temps. Good luck.

The gauges are glorified idiot lights.

I would switch oil filters before I swapped oil brands. Sounds like the oil filter allowed all the oil to drain back. Get a Motorcraft filter (Wal-Mart). Their silicone anti-drain back valve works to prevent what you experienced.

I always ran Mobil 1 too but the Motorcraft stuff is pretty good oil! It is semi-synthetic so it is good protection at start-up and it pumps quickly. I currently use it in my 03 Expy. It's cheap, plentiful and factory fill.

David, same thing exactly happend to my 2000 about a month ago. It only showed no oil pressure when it was cold. It turned out to be the oil pressure sender. The same idiot light bulb lights both the oil and temp warning light. Sender cost was about $6.oo and labor was around $50.00 at the local Forld dealer.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I did finally find an older thread with much of the same data so I apologize for the redundancy. I did want to share that I had a friend in Ford pull a "Special Service Message" on this topic and it is very definitive. Here is the gist of it:

"Some 1999-2001 Fords (many models listed including the X) may exhibit low or no oil pressure usually on first start up after several hours of cold soak. To service, replace existing oil pressure switch F8AZ-9278-DA with new pressure switch 1U5Z-9278-DA."

This was Special Service Message number 14907. Bottom line is that this happens when left idle in cold temperatures for an extended period of time. Does not seem to be a real oiling issue, just an indicator issue.

I have the same problem here lately since the temps have dipped to single digits. I bought the above mentioned part #1u5z-9278-da(sw-5696) $4.81. Now, I need some warmer weather to replace the offending part.
