ok heres the story...

Picture my stock excursion...stock tires, EVERYTHING. Picture it in a foot and a half of snow that has already started to ice over. Yeah not too good. This Saturday I went up to the mountains with a friend of mine. He brought his jeep, and I had my quad and my father. We had stopped and done some shooting, then proceeded to go over the top of the hill, and around the backside. Mainly because there was a suburban that I just wanted to pass up. MISTAKE!!!! The first time I got stuck, we were there for about 15 minutes. 5 minutes into the ordeal, here comes that suburban makin its way down the hill! Talk about swollowing my pride! After that, my dad drove, and I towed the quad trailer with the quad. X was pulled out 3 more times after that.

Just wanted to share my weekend defeat with y'all! I hope you get a good laugh, and maybe even some memories and stories will come of this!

have fun,
DX

I give driving lessons to X owners for free. Sometimes things happen, sometimes the truck does not do the right thing, sometimes you just screw it all up. Been there , done that. I feel for you bro.

I guess it all depends on what your stock tires are. Usually, they come out of the factory equipped for the 95% of people who rarely see gravel roads, let alone deep snow and/or off-roading.

Back when I had my '97 Expedition, I went on an off-road trip with about 27 other Expeditions. A vast majority had the stock tires (either Goodyears or Continetals), but a few of us had BFG TA KOs or similar tires. The aggressive treads were able to do far better on the trickier sections of the trails than the stock tires. I was happy to see that my Excursion came with BFG Rugged Trail tires, but when the time comes for new rubber, I'll be getting the TA KOs.

No offense meant, but it may also have something to do with deep snow driving experience. I learned a long time ago that you have to know when to goose it, and most importantly when not to goose it, in the deep stuff. The other thing I learned is to keep moving. Bad things tend to happen if you stop in deep snow, or fluffy sand for that matter. Of course, getting stuck is the best way to learn how not to let it happen the next time.

I have the stock meats on the excursion. What are they...goodyears? They're crap! I have have quiet a bit of expirience off roading, especially in deep snow...I just don't any tread to pull me! lol

I used to own 97' expo also, and I had coopers on it. That expedition was invinsible! Stock height and everything.

Have fun, and thanx for the support in my time of enbarassment! lol

I loved my '97. I put a little over 170,000 miles on it. No problems, engine ran as good as, if not better than, when it was new. After driving it for 5 years, I traded it for an '03. The '03 was nice, but not nearly as good off-road. We outgrew the '03 after a year, so now I'm driving what has to be the best all-around vehicle made. While it can't handle some of the trails that my first Expedition could, the Excursion beats it in every other category.

We did a lot of towing with the expedition, and the tranny started giving on. So at the end of the year, when all the rebates were in, (right before the new body style was released), we traded in the expedtion, and bought the mother of all SUV's!! yea baby!

have fun,
DX

PS...yeah, I've taken the X places I htought it would never go...

I have found the Ex to be surprisingly able off road and in deep snow.

Rule number one. don't get bottomed out and stopped.

Rule number two. Carry a shovel you can handle and lotsa grub and liquid refreshments.

Rule number three. If your driving on an ice road, Don't down shift, forget the brakes and drive easy.

I've never been able to get the EX stuck so methinks you musta been doing something wrong in only a foot and a half of snow. Bald tires? :-)

I spent much time north of 60' playing in the Mackenzie Valley with my bronco and I learned much about cold weather, deep snow, off road cruising.

But getting stuck repeatedly in an EX....In a measly 18" of snow...... tsk tsk tsk....... NO..... HAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!
