Okay, another stupid question that you guys can hopefully answer for me. My 2000 Excursion seems to have a bit of a growling sound coming from the rear somewhere that is most noticeable when idling slowly such as through a parking lot. It's actually similar to what my Alpha I sounds like on my Sea Ray when idling in gear, for those of you that may be familiar with that noise.

Since Excursions are rare around here, and the ones that do show up on a lot are usually sold within a matter of hours, I haven't been able to locate one for a test drive to see if it's usual or if I have a problem. Also, since I can't drive and look underneath at the same time, it's hard to tell where the sound is exactly coming from. Is this just the normal sound of the massive Sterling gears, or are they meshing a bit too much?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

How many miles on the X? Does the sound go up and down in pitch when you step on the gas? Does it go away when you let your foot off the gas and just coast?

88k miles on the beast already.

That's the problem, it's only noticable when I'm idling slowly that I can tell. After I speed up to anything past an idle, the tire noise from these cheap tires takes over and I can't hear anything but them. Wow, I can't wait to get those things changed out. They sound like super-swampers but they're only AT's.

my guess is brakes.

The rear end will let you know when its pissed off. Either under acceleration or coast you will get the "noise" or growl. Id take a look at your rear brakes.
