Has anyone tried putting an under-drive pulley set on the V10? I don't even know if anyone makes a set for the X, but they can add a nice chunk of HP.

Underdrive pulley systems increase engine horsepower by reducing the amount of power required to drive external engine accessories. For example, the alternator, power steering, water pump and air compressor rob horsepower from the engine. By replacing factory-sized crank and accessory drive pulleys with a resized pulley, the accessories are slowed, resulting in more horsepower available to the drive wheels. Typically, a set of Auto Specialties street pulleys will increase horsepower by 12-15, and increase mileage by 2 to 3 MPG. All pulleys are manufactured from Billet Steel or Aluminum, exceeding factory quality. (Source: Auto Specialties Performance.)

Ahhhh... ok. that make 'em sense. I was picturing some sort of funky transmission modification. If you run across that pulley system for an X, I'd certainly be interested in hearing about it. Anything to save a little gas right now

I see their value in racing applications but...

Do you really want you lights to dim to the output of a candle when stopped at a light? Or your battery die due to driving around town?

Do you want you steering to be higher effort when backing, turning into the driveway etc....when you need to swerve to avoid hitting that kid who just ran after his ball?

When towing do you really want LESS water to travel through the system?

Do you want your AC to be even more ineffecient?

I can appreciate the quest for power and mileage but I do not think that, for a daily driver, this is a viable solution. Well, it may be viable but at what cost.

Until you increase the BMEP of the V10 or reduce the weight it is carrying you will NOT get substantially more power PLUS MPG increase.

It the choice all of us "modders" have to make. We have to balance $$, where the torque peak hits, HP output and the amount and cost of the fuel burned to get us there.

BTW, You can reduce the parasitic losses of the "hangoff" equipement but not cheaply. In fact, manufacturers are doing just that right now. It is said that in the future many of the mechanically driven components will be electrically powered and the now comon 12V system will soon become a 42V system. I think battery technology and cost reductions have to catch up.

As an example, GM has a Saturn SUV that has an electric steering pump.

Stick with something tried and true if you want more power. Chip it...just don't look too hard at your wallet when filling it. Plus, look on the bright side! I pay $2.25 a gallon for 87!

It's not nearly that bad here.... I paid $1.51/gallon yesterday. Of course, Hawaii is notorious for expensive gas so i guess Im not shocked. What's the price of diesel?

'bout the same.

I actually buy my gas at Costco (a wholesale warehouse store) and pay 2.01.

I agree with monsta. I did a lot of testing and dyno work with my '99 Mustang Cobra. When i installed a mod, it was at the dyno facility after a baseline run. That way we knew for sure if we gained anything.(dyno rule #1-same dyno, same day, same operator). Steeda underdrive pulleys, which are the best, gained nothing. We then check alternator voltage(before and after) and lost a little voltage as far as charging the battery. I didn't notice a difference in the temp gauge, but there had to be. $175.00 down the drain. By the way, mileage did not change. Do not do this mod on a heavy tow vehichle; you need all the cooling and charging you can get. You and your wife could have a very nice evening for that money, and your rewards later on in the evening could be priceless.
