I have a 2001 XLT 4x4 w/ V-10 Engine. The truck currntly has 54,000 miles on it and is completly
stock. Lately while stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake the R.P.M.s will climb from
800 to around 1200 to 1400 forcing the truck forward even with the brake pedal fully depressed.
I took it into the dealer this week and it also did it to them while they were pulling it into the work bay. The computer check comes back clean so they have no idea what to try to fix. This does not occur all the time, but seems to be occuring on a more frequent basis lately. I used to notice this
after a 3 to 4 hour trip on the highway when I would stop for the first time. Nothing is touching the gas pedal wile this is occuring. It will just jump up and than back down. It never drops below it's
normal idle r.p.m. just up. As anyone else had this problem.

Never had that problem and I don't think I've seen it here either.
However, you may want to try cleaning your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It's what regulates your idle speed. Sometimes the computer won't show it as being the culprit because it's justa little carboned up. Just make sure you use sensor safe spray solvent.
If you need help locating it or need to know how to clean it just reply and either myself or someone who's quicker on the draw will help you out.
Good luck!

What is the warranty situation like in the U.S.? If the problem occurred when they were driving the vehicle, I would make sure they have it repaired before I took the truck back. (Of course, if it is not on warranty, that could become painful.) |

I agree that it sounds suspiciously like an IAC problem. As to warranty -- as I recall, the EPA mandated emission warranty expires at 5 yrs or 50K.

I just picked up a 2002 Excursion XLT V10 2WD. The exact same thing happened to me. It only happened once and not since. I though it may have been my flip flop I was wearing at the time pushing against the acclerator pedal while I was pushing down on the brake pedal. The harder I pushed on the brake the faster the engine turned. Almost hit another truck.
Does anyone know if the IAC was fixed on the 2002? If not, this is a serious problem and requires a recall of some sort. I'm surprised that I don't hear much about it.
I have a 98 Toyota Camry and that has an IAC sticking issue as well, but it is usually stuck closed causing the engine to sputter when started cold. Never had it increased the RPMs.
Anyone with any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
