My 2000 Excursion XLT (6.8L V10 / 44,800 miles) will die suddenly and then may run properly for a month or so. Two months ago I thought I had a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, Cam timing sensor or something going bad, but the Ford Tech said the anti THEFT is activating in error. The X will die without warning, no cough or hesitation, and it will do at idle or at speed. When I go to restart the X the THEFT light will blink fast, which activates the anti THEFT feature and will not let you crank it. If you wait a minute or so, the THEFT light will blink slow and it will let you crank the engine. It sometimes will die in a few seconds, and sometimes it will not die for a month or so. Has ANYONE had any experience with this? The Ford Tech could not get a code from the computer, but said it could be the guage cluster, key, or something in the steering column. Your help is greatly appreciated! I am planning an out of state trip in a month, and I need this problem resolved.

My guess is its your GEM (General Electronic Module).

This thing houses the security system, alarm, wipers, and more. The PATS key is identified upon startup, so your key is working. Something in the GEM is causing this.

Do you have any aftermarket stuff on your ride?

Thanks a lot for the post Jared! I bought my X with 38K miles on it in April of 2003, and I believe it is totally stock. Can you give me more information on this (GEM) General Electirc Module, specifically where it is located and what it looks like. I have a Haynes Repair Manual for the X, but it does not mention this part. Any other thoughts guys? Can the Anti Theft feature be disabled?

Hi Craig,

I was cruising ebay and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34205&item=2455641957

From the picture I recognize this part and refer to it commonly as the "compuper". On my '00 Ex it is located behind both a plastic, then a metal cover down by the foot actuated parking brake on the left side of the driver's foot box.

Hope this helps,
Randy R...

Good News! I took the X to the Ford Dealership I bought it from (out of state), and they found the problem. The computer was not working properly, and they replaced it under warranty. They said the computer could not identify the PATS Key from time to time, causing the anti-theft system to shut the SUV down by mistake.
