I knew when I bought this 2000 Excursion with the V-10 that the mpg was going to suck. I never imangined that it would be THIS BAD!! Is there anything I can do to get it into the teens? I barley drive this thing because it sucks the gas down so fast. I find myself saying, "Well, you don't REALLY have to leave to go there" just because I know that it was cost me a fortune to drive it. I LOVE this thing, but at $55- $60 a week that hurts!!

Help!!!

I've never done better than 14.2, and that was straight interstate driving with one stop and no traffic to speak of. Kept it at 66 mph (below 2000 rpm) and didn't have to invoke passing gear.

Now, in day to day driving, I get about 11 mpg. It's just not going to do a lot better in stock trim. If you run E rated tires you could put 80 psi in them and that would help some. Engine mods might gain you a little bit and a new exhaust won't hurt. Investing major bucks in an attempt to get better mileage will not likely pay off.

You might consider getting a smaller vehicle for daily driving. If you're like me you can't afford that. But consider that you're adding +/- $230 a month to your car payment in gas. A VW Jetta TDI would probably run the entire month on one or two tanks of diesel. It all depends on what you need to do with the vehicle.

Good luck.

We've got an '01 V-10 with only an intake and cat back. Where is this mileage coming from? At best we've seen 11.5 highway and 7.5 to 9 around town. I realize that we have a remote starter and being the cold season warming the vehicle up takes it's toll. I'm really not complaining though, we had an Expedition and a Ram 2500 neither of which broke 10 mpg. I just can't believe some of the numbers I'm seeing.

Wow... Not sure what the issue is with your low numbers. I am getting a consistent 10.5MPG in the city and I've done as well 15.5MPG on the highway. I have an '01 V10'r. Heck! I got 10.5MPG towing about 7000#'s! I don't stomp on the accelerator much at all, though.

Can't forget gears people! I'm running 4.30LS stock and get average city/hwy of 11 or so which means probably around 12-13 hwy and 9-10 city. If someone is running the 3.73 they'll be getting much better.

And ya can't forget ol' leadfoot. The wife gets better mileage than I do cause of that!

From what I have heard and seen, if you can keep it below 2000RPM you'll be in the "sweet spot" for mileage. For me, I'll just have to wait til I get the 37's on her for that to happen.

First off, I'd make sure your parking braking isn't stuck. (Serious!)

Then I'd check all the normal stuff...air cleaner, tire pressure, oil condition, fuel filter and since you are showing 71K on the clock...the tranny fluid.

I'd start looking into plugs, too.

If your mileage is still where it is after you get the truck up to standard then you'll probably have to live with it.

Brian, another thing that could help is telling us what your definition of " ...never imagined that it would be THIS BAD!! " is. Plus, are you complaining about city or highway driving?

Hey everyone.....Thanks for the replies. Maybe I can't compalin. Here's the deal. This last Monday I was forced to take the "X" to Sioux City, IA from Omaha, NE. I live in Omaha and I have a route that sends me to Sioux City twice a day Monday-Friday. I normally drive my 2000 VW Jetta TDI that now has 208K on it and get's about 48-53 mpg in the summer and 39-43 in the winter. Well, back to the story. The roads were TERRIBLE. The interstate was closed in some spots and the snow wouldn't stop falling. I took the "X" up there. The wind was a constant 25-35 mph out of the north and I had it in four wheel drive the whole way up which is about 138 miles. I averaged around 11 MPG going anywhere from 40-65 MPH. Then....I get there, do my duties, turn around and come back with the wind behind me and averaged 15.9-17.6 the whole way back WITH the four wheel drive engaged. I'm impressed and no longer a complainer. This thing saved my ass on Monday. There is NO WAY that my TDI would have driven through it all. We got 14-16 inches depending on where you were at that day/Sunday night.

Also...someone told me to replace the stock exhaust with a Flowmaster set up and replace the air fiter with a K&N cold air intake NOT the drop in filter. This guy told me that he got his 2001 Silverado 4X4 from 14 MPG to 19 MPG by doing this. Think it might work on this big old "X"???

Thanks everyone!!
