Just wondering what the idle should be at on a V-10. Mine, once it is warmed up, idles at 900 RPM. It sounds kinda fast. I traded a 00 Windstar in on this X and it idled at 600 RPM. Just curious!

Seems like mine idles about 650 or so when warm. Maybe 700. Now that you mention it, I never paid that much attention to it. I'll check next time I'm in it.

Ours used to idle around 750, then I put a Gibson Side Swept on and it's around 900 now. I called Ford and Gibson, they both told me up to 1100 is ok. |

Mine was at 900 when I bought it and 23,000 later it's still at 900.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Maybe mine is just fine. After all, I do have 4 more cylinders now.

I just bought a used Excursion. It is idling at 900 as well. It feels too fast. I have to use the brakes more that I am used to.
Does anyone have access to instructions how to reduce the idling to about 700. |

Mine idles around 700-850 when warmed up, but first crank it will sit around 900ish...

The 2000 V10 we just bought idles at 900 in park, which does feel too fast. However, there's no PCM codes (I scanned it just in case), and the check engine light is not on , so I'm assuming all is well.
Idle speed in park or neutral is controlled by the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. Being new to the V10, I'm not sure, but is it a common problem for these to carbon up and require cleaning?
There's really no way to adjust idle speed, the computer controls it. Messing with the throttle stop screw will not do anything but mess up your TPS signal, so I wouldn't advise it. |

Best I can determine, idle speed should be around 650. I have a Ford workshop information CD and while it does not give me idle speeds in a directly addressed manner, I found a rating of proper oil pressures. The low end specification for oil pressure was measured at 650 RPM's. I would have the idle speed looked at as that seems high to me. My 01 6.8L idles around 650. |
