I have been dealing with a vibration/hum that starts at 45 and is terribly loud at 85 mph. The problem started a month after I purchsed the truck. Ford refuses to see the truck anymore until a factory engineer comes to Atlanta. I have been waiting since December for this to happen. I think my dealership is just lying about a factor engineer to keep me from bugging them about it. Ford did replace the drive shaft but this did nothing. We know it is not the tires or brakes. The noise sounds like it is coming from the drivetrain and is worse when I let off of the gas. If I'm going up a hill or really press down on the accelerator the noise disapears. I need anyones help on this!!!! Why me?

Brian

My Excursion is 4-wheel drive, V10, 2003 model. Any comments would be very appreciated.

Consider taking it to a different dealer?

Sounds like a tranny problems. Maybe a TC lockup problem...

I must say that Ford did correct my vibration problem, I love my truck, I continue to drive it everyday. But this was a frustrating problem that made me upset with Ford and the Dealer(s) every time I drove it. During peak of my complaint they had me drive a brand new PSD that shook worse than mine! That didn't help me to feel any better about my truck.

On my truck, once the Regional Service Tech took a ride and said that it was "vehicle characteristic" No Other dealer would touch the problem.. SO BEFORE THAT HAPPENS get as many complaints on record and road test in with your dealer mechanics and service managers, sales manager, sales reps. Any one who will listen.

Always obtain a copy of the work order when you leave the vehicle for repairs, and always obtain a copy of the completed repair order on picking up your vehicle. Be sure that the work order reflects your own words and comments about your complaints. If the Service Technician summarizes or changes your complaint to the point where it becomes ambiguous or vague, have that Service Advisor or Technician revise and/or add your corrected comments. Sign and receive a copy of the Repair Order before you leave.

Although not absolutely necessary to prove your claim at a later date, copies of the records prevent the dealer from writing several repair visits as one, a common practice. I had five separate attempts to fix the problem. 5 different visits 5 different ideas, 5 days without my truck, listed on one work order counted as "single visit".

Ford should fix your truck, but they only will commit the time and funds if they think you are aggressive and will not back down. Lemon Laws are on your side, but the dealers know how to delay this process. A friendly conversation now might be the difference between New axle, or getting shrugged off, 6 months later.

What finally ended my problem was they replaced all the bearings in the rear axle and diff. However they never admitted it was for the vibration in the rear end. but it was to fix a differential chatter that a mechanic felt while on a test ride. I never complaind, heard or felt a chatter. I guess they can save face this way, or keep the statistics on vibration problem lower this way.

I had a eariler post of my process, E.LONG? are the archives from the old site gone?

Ken D.

I'm glad they fixed your problem. It sounds like we may have the same situation. Can you please be more specific with the repair that fixed your truck? This way I can take your fix to them and say that this repair fixed a problem similar to mine.

Was your vibration similar to what I described?

Thanks....Brian

The characteristics listed above are a sign of bad bearings in the rear end.

Basically, upon a load or heavy foot the chatter/noise/humm is gone. But, when you let your foot off the skinny pedal you will get the binding,

its from the coast side of the gears.

Could be a tranny or TC problem, but typically those are always evident whether you let your foot off the pedal or not.

Sounds like a rear end, have them replace it. Describe the same thing to a rear end shop and they will tell you a bearing is gone.
