I was wondering if someone could give me some insight....My husband and I (I know it is unusal to have women on here..but I am in love with the excursion and want one..so to help get my way I am doing some serious research! Plus I have more time on my hands!), we are trying to decide whether to get a V10 or Diesel. We are not worried about gas mileage (we currently own an expedition, so we know not to expect much!), just worried about which one holds up better and has the least amount of problems. We keep hearing that the V10 has had alot of problems and to get the diesel, but my husband does not know much about diesel engines...he could tear apart a gas engine and rebuild it!! We would certainly appreciate any insight you can give us!!

Hi neighbor, and welcome to this forum.

I own a gas V10, but I do appreciate the attributes of the diesel. If I had to make the choice again, I would opt for the 6.0 PSD engine (bought mine used at Hall Ford in Newport News). But if it's YOU who are going to drive the thing mostly, are you willing to live with the fumes, noise, and refills at non-car-like fueling stations. All motors have their problems, but it really boils down to what you two prefer. As you've seen here in southeast VA, diesel prices tend to be higher than regular unleaded gas. If the price difference is 25-cents per gallon, it will take you 192K miles to make up a $4K price difference in a new X. Yeah, better MPG is nice, but it takes a long time for it to make up for the "new vehicle" price difference.

Now Ken - you and I both know the 6.0 is in need of big time mods to get it right - it's a Ford warranty managers nightmare currently. Yes - it's better than the old power stroke, but it's got a long way to go. No way I would trade my V10 for a nasty old diesel. What are you thinking? LOL

You can crunch numbers and compare stats all day long. What it all boils down to is this, get what you want. Both engines have their merits and honestly, very few problems. I've had no problems with my V10, and my dad has had no problems with his 2000 F250 Powerstroke diesel. I split my time about 50/50 between being content with the gas engine and wishing I had the PSD. For me the V10 gas engine makes better sense as I make fairly short trips and don't tow anything. But that diesel does sound cool.

The best solution would be to buy one of each. But that may not be practical for you, unless your name is Monsta and you live in the lap of luxury in Hawaii sitting around eating banana splits all day. Just kidding, Monsta Ken.

Oh, and by the way Excursionluvr, welcome to the site. It is nice to have a woman around to give us a different perspective on things. Good luck.

i have the diesel, my wife drives it daily. I would never get a V10 unless it was in a viper.

I think the 7.3 is a much better motor than the 6.0. Let's see how the 6.0's do long term, we know they are troublesome when new. If a dealership aproached me with a low milleage used 6.0 X for trade for the 108K mile 2000 X I would pass. Ford should have spent one more year testing the 6.0 before using people as test beds for there $45,000 machines. I may never own a 6.0 as I could not afford having the truck sit at the dealership getting reflashed and worked on. GM's Duramax sales are up 29% and Dodge can't keep the Cummins on there lots wonder why?
Sorry Ford, you messed up bigtime on this one!!!

As far as a 6.8 vrs. 7.3 or 6.0 goes I'd buy depending on use mainly. If you do more short trips (under 10 miles) and don't tow much the 6.8 will work fine. Buying used however you can really find a good deal on a diesel. Resale on a diesel is much better than a gas motor. If you live in a cold region and don't have a garage you'll have starting problems with the diesel. This morning it was -24 outside temp, both trucks were plugged in in the garage and both fired right up.

When my wife told me she'd like an X (actually I wanted one more!!) she wanted a diesel as much as much as me. We found a nice one for cheap and now she is in love with it. She used to love to drive my truck now she don't like it anymore!

diesel prices here are typically 5 to 10 cents cheaper than 87. diesel doesn't seem to spike as bad as gas either. maybe this is not the norm nationwide but sure did help me "make it a diesel"

I'm not sure what you heard about the V10, but it is an excellent engine. My wife and I both have Excursion's and both have the V10. My 2000 has 72K miles and runs great. I use Mobil 1 oil and add about a quart between 7-8K mile changes. In town I get 10/11(all stop and go less than 10 miles) and on highway 13.5 to 14.5 mpg(75 mph or 2300 rpm) with the higher figures in summer. The 2003(both are 4WD with 3.73 axle) got better mileage on the highway even before 10K on odometer. Up to 15 mpg running 75 mph on trips.

Maybe you heard about the problems with the early versions of the 6 liter PSD. If you drive 20K miles or less year and don't keep the diesel more than 4 years you won't break even on the option of the PSD versus the increased gas cost. On the other hand, with the PSD you can spread out the cost in the loan and get much better resale value.

I considered some used EX's with the PSD and the trade in value here in Michigan is about 8K more than the V10. So based on that the PSD may be the way to go. When the last model year is announced I probably go with the PSD just to have something different. By that time the 6 liter will have all the kinks worked out.

Get the diesel. Here's why. Better towing, better milage, much much better re-sale. I could have gotten a year newer V10 with half the miles for less money than I paid for the PSD. At first sticker shock set in and I though, did I make the right choice? Heck yes I made the right choice! More money up front but more money when you trade her in on another diesel or sale it to someone else. I have the V10 in my 99 F250 it's a GREAT engine but VERY HARD on gas in town traffic. Now that I have had both I will never own another V10.
