I have done some digging in this forum and see that the tranny/converter seems to be the weak link with the X. Has anyone had any luck keeping a stock tranny/converter together with a chip/micro tuner mod?
I have a stock 00 X 4wd 7.3 and it has 104k miles on it. I want a increase in Fuel milage, currently (13-14 intown and 18-20 hwy). My question is, If I don't hot rod the X and I don't tow with it can I get by with say a 60hp increase without killing the tranny? I don't know if the tranny is original or not but it looks very clean and shifts and runs smooth.

How much better fuel milage could I expect to gain?

Any way to tell if the tranny has been previously replaced?

Any other fuel milage tricks?

Mods so far.

Thanks all,

We have a lot of variables here. Let's start with what we do know. Any kind of horsepower is going to hurt the torque converter if it is stock. It will hurt the trans. too. Yous ay you have over 100k miles, thats no good, but you say it looks clean(maybe a little promising) if so , who built it? If it was built, did they know what they were doing? I am sorry to be negative, but i have to try and answere these questions all the time. We don't know. It's a gambel.

First, crawl under the truck and look at the tranny. It should have a rebiult tag on it if it's been replaced.
My F250's tranny lasted 30,000 miles with a diablo junk chip set at 80hp. Now the new tranny (stock rebuild) runs perfect with 60,000 unchipped miles.
When the chip was in the truck I noticed no change in fuel consumption. The fine print with the chip companies is you will at least get the same fuel economy as before with the extra power.

I will never chip again unless the truck gets a built tranny and torque convertor.

I have gone through 4 trannies (E4OD) in 140k, with stock engine very light towing(4000# or less). I did my own trans rebuild and upgrades the lats time, and I now have 175k and it has been chipped as well as other mods for the last 30k and it shifts better then when it was new from Ford. I agree there are way too many variables to give you a intelligent answer, and yes it is a gamble. As far as I am concerned there are only three chip mfg's worth a darn in the USA and they are Diesel Power/Edge, Diesel Innovations, and TS Preformance. All three do custom programming. Any other brand is just a vendor for a chip burning "factory" that does not care about you or your truck.

You missed one. The Ford chips sold by TS (which does a lot of their own and is a great company) are made by TTS. There are others that rebadge the TTS.

Yes Mike you are right TTS makes a good chip too. I remember thet used to be a little "unrefined" as far as everyday driving habbits go but they made good power. I am sure they have polished up the rough edges by now.
