Hi...first post. Just purchased a used 2000 PSD Excursion. Really love the truck. I noticed after I got it home that there is oil leaking between the engine and transmission. It's definitely engine oil and not trans. Dealer says they will fix it this week for free. They also told me it is usually not a rear main seal, but rather oil from the turbo or 'spillage' or something like that. I don't think they believe me, but I have a large patch of oil on my garage floor that's coming from somewhere. Anyone have this problem or insight into it? This is my first diesel. It has 58K miles on it and runs like a top. Thanks.

I kinda doubt it's the rear-main seal as well. The seals on the turbo occasionally will fail and leak. Judging by where the turbo is located on the motor, it's certainly conceivable that the oil your seeing is coming from the turbo housing then running around the bell-housing. Let us know what they find. If it's the rear seal, I will be surprised.

I had another mechanic tell me it's probably not the rear main seal. Seems like a lot of leakage from the turbo though. The truck is going into the shop on Wednesday morning. They are going to put dye in the oil and see where it's coming from. I'll let everyone know.

Here's what they found. There was oil in the engine valley between the cylinder banks and it was leaking down the back of the engine. They found that the tubes connected to the turbo had slightly loose clamps and they tightened up everything including all covers and oil line to turbo. They cleaned it and put dye in the oil and found no leaks. I wasn't completely satisfied and asked where the oil came from in the first place. It turns out, the Ford service manual talks about oil the engine valley and says that if the air filter is not changed in a timely manner, there is such a large quantity of air needed and the engine will suck oil from the crankcase breather into the intake system. Mine was in turn, leaking excess oil from the loose clamps. I guess diesels are more sensitive to a dirty filter.

You are very right about the sensitivity with the air intake. I have 2 AFE aftermarket filters that I rotate religiously every 2 tank fulls approximately 1200 miles.

I trough the dirty filter in the dish washer, let dry for a while then re-oil for the next time to replace. The stock filters really don't allow the air needed for these huge truly air pumps to run efficiently. This may be overkill but it only take 2-3 minutes to pop open the hood, release the clamps and replace the filter.

One of the other reasons I do this is I drilled to 2" holes behind the grill to add air to the intake. Sorta' ram air. This give the Powerstroke a little more breathing with-out going gung ho on a new intake set up, The down side is the filter gets dirty quick but I do gain HP and fuel economy.

By the way, my 03' tranny was pulled 3 weeks ago to have the rear main seal inspected. I too thought the seal was leaking. It ended up being the turbo O rings. The up side, They put in a torque converter in for free.
