Hello X Sages.

I am the new owner of a 2002 V 10 X with 32000 ish miles. It has been a long time since I have owned an American car, but I have to say this is by far the BEST car I have ever owned. I am in awe of its tight ride and lack of rattles! And what a tank! I do have one question. It seems to ping badly when it is at about 50 mph in overdrive and under load. The dealer says that the engine is not pining, but that the sound is made by the exhaust manifolds.

I relly don't want to blow a hole in a piston or a head gasket. Is this actually ping or is the dealer telling me the straight story?

Thanks All!

Dave

02s were suppose to be over that...

What the sound is (ir could be) is what is referred to as "flutter". It is basically exhaust pulses colliding with each other at certain velocities (RPM). Ford "fixed" it by necking down the exhaust on the passenger cylinder bank right where the two banks come together. This is referred to as the Y-pipe.

It was suppose to increase the velocity from the right bank to prevent this sound from happening. Your 02 has the necked down Y-pipe.

Inspet your heat shields and the inspection plate between the tranny and engine. Sometimes these cause the same type of sound bacuse they are loose. I know one of my heat shields was loose and it only sounded off at a certain RPM. Drove me crazy for a few days!

If it is indeed "flutter" and not something loose, the only real fix is headers and a new Y-pipe. ($$) Don't try higher octane fuel as it has no effect on it.

Thanks Monsta, I will look at it first thing in the AM. Is this something I would expect the dealer to address or am I on my own for this? If so can you recomend some headers for me? It sure sounds like knock and ping... I have only had the car for a couple of months, and have run several tanks of gas from various stations through and still the same thing. I wouldn't dream of putting higher octane gas in the thirsty beast!
