All-
I am currently in the market for an 02-03 X with the 7.3 PS engine, and I am having a difficult time in convincing my wife that 30-40K in mileage on a diesel is much less significant than a regular gas engine. I am looking to get at least as many miles out of my next vehicle as I did my last (175K on a Blazer), but am I opening up myself for trouble by buying an X with 40K already logged? The vehicle ('03 X Limited) is being offered at a very good price and is a "certified" pre-owned vehicle, but the high mileage in year one of ownership is causing my wife to hesitate on pulling the trigger on this deal.
Can anyone out there help change her mind? I would hate to sink another $10K into a vehicle just to buy it new, when I can get a vehicle that will last me as long as I desire (6-8 years) for significantly less. |

first off, One of the first reasons that I'm responding to your thread bryant, is because my name is bryant also. yea, i know..
Typically, a diesel motor will run 250,000 miles, and not even look back or think twice. So 40,000 mls. aint nothing. Now, Its been my expirence, that if you look on the inside of the vehicle, and see that it has been trashed (or evidence of), that the motor has been abused. If this is the case, I would wait a little, and (one) see how long the X sits there and maybe the price will go down. (two) or wait a again, and find anoyher deal, with maybe less miles OR is in immaculate condition.
Now if this x is in greeat condition, then explain to your wife. "honey, baby, sugar love! you know I love you! " it wont hurt... "The truck is obviously in great condition on the inside which means that was taken care of, and that the motor most likely ewas not abused! Therefore the measly 40k miles on it now, or simply freeway (cruise control) miles..." Maybe ur wife is a little bit more stubborn than mine..I DOUBT IT THOUGH. MY WIFE IS A REDHEAD!
hahahahahaha...Good luck in court buddy, let know what happens bryant!
have fun,
bryant |

Haha! That's too funny, and rather ironic. We share the same name and have to deal the the troubles of a stubborn redhead- though in my case, I'M the redhead, and my wife has to endure my stubborness.
The vehicle is immaculate, and the asking price is only 32K (not cheap, but cheaper), so I think that I am going to forge ahead with this deal.. I will be driving mostly highway miles myself, so the wear and tear that the vehicle would face in the future would be minimal. Thanks for the reply! I only hope that I can be posting pix of my new ride in the very near future!

Good day gents,
It's always nice to read what you have the say Bryant, now I need to deal with two of ya!
So from here Mr. Loke is absolute correctamundo! A partner of mine had a 97 F350 dually that finally was traded in with 352,000 on the odometer... WOW and all he did was replace a water pump at 210,000. These were hard driven miles with a 11K lb 32 ft trailer on the rear. And now he has a 2002 F350 pushing 65K with a bigger trailer.
I do recommend that a strict maintenance schedule is adhered to. Synthetic Motor oil and synthetic tranny fluid gives you the best protection bar none. Have the dealer change the fluids prior to delivery and then you change the fluids to synthetic, the parts will be nice and clean. You should be able to go 8-10k+ miles on the motor oil but recommend oil filter change @ 5k. Synthetic oil just does not brake down; it's chemically enhanced not to break down.
I installed a Amsoil bypass oil system on my X. Running synthetic I can get 25K miles without changing the oil. My truck just hit 7K since my last change and looks as it was changed yesterday.

Look for the below items. Get them in the gallon or larger jug. Cheaper!
SAE 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil
Synthetic Supershift Racing Transmission Fluid
Have fun with your new X....

You won't have to worry about the motor for a while it should have the 100,000 mile warranty. Perhaps the previous owner is just taking advantage of the 100% depreciation for business use.
I bought my 99 F250 with 40K miles when it was two years old, put over 100K on it with no motor problems.
Seen and heard of guys with PSD's up to 500K-600K miles with out a rebuild.
At the dealership the X came out of (biggest Ford dealership in MN) they have had PSD's traded in with over 600K. When I asked what they did with the high mileage trucks his response was, auction.
Being how well the PSD's run I wouldn't worry about one unless it was around 250K miles and not taken car of.
