For the second time in my life, I ran out of fuel yesterday. I was worried about getting it started again, as I've heard that diesels can be more difficult after running out of fuel. After turning it over a couple of times, it fired right up.
I put 2 gallons in from a can, then filled it up with another 40 gallons. This struck me as being odd because it has a 44 gallon tank. I filled at the same station, and same pump, that I usually use. I know that I've put over 43 gallons in it before at that pump. The only thing I can figure is that as I was going up hill when it died, that the fuel left in the tank moved away from the fuel pick up.
Oh well, live and learn.
Is there anything I should check after running a diesel empty? I don't want to do any more damage than I may have already done. |

Don't run it past a 1/4 empty ---- especially during big temp changes - the condensation inside the tank and "junK' in the bottom of your tank will do bad things to ya !

I was reading my 6.0 PSD Sup Guide and it talked about running out of fuel like it wasn't any big deal. Pretty much said it may run rough for a few minutes but it would purge the air out of the system by itself and be fine.
I'm making a note though, continue to be diligent about keeping it fueled

When I first purchased my Excursion, I almost ran out of fuel on the way to my parents' place, with them and my sister in the SUV with me. Talk about a potentially embarassing situation. The overhead console indicated '45 km until empty' and a roadside immediately after showed 50 km until our destination. I must say, the console is very accurate. The fuel tank holds 166 litres of fuel and when we made it into town, with the console showing 0 km until empty, I managed to put 164.5 litres into the fuel tank. |

My kilometers until empty was around 175 km until I used the remote start at IKEA for 20 minutes. When I got to the truck, it was reporting 0 km until empty. The moment I drove a few feet though, it went back up to around 175 km. |

yeah.. that readout likes to move quick when the tank gets near bottom. Ive learned to ignor it to avoid ulcers before I get to the diesel pump. |
