What is the Output Speed Sensor, OBDII Code P0720 on a 2000 Ford Excursion 6.8L 4x4? I was driving on I-20 last night, and my Overdrive button 'OFF' light started blinking while at 75 mph. Normally the OD button is either ON (no light), or OFF (Off light illuminated). Shortly afterwards the check engine light came on, and Auto Zone read the code to be P0720 'Output Speed Sensor'. I took out the OD button on the shifter and wiped the pins and put it back in. It has not done it since, but I have not driven far. What is going on with the X, and how do I fix it! Your Help is Greatly Appreciated!

The Output Speed Sensor is located on the top of the rear diff. I think they go for about $20.00.

had the same happen to my 2000 4x4 v10 x. it started flashing just like yours. took to dealer and when they pulled out speed sensor it had metal shavings all over it. they put in new sensor and still had problems so replaced bearings as that is what was causing the metal shavings. covered under extended warr had about 40,000 miles at time. make sure auto zone doesnt clear codes when you take it in as the dealer gave me a bunch of %*&$ the last time i took it in. they said when they scanned it they showed that the codes had been cleared. there is code for clearing codes. i might have had it scanned at autozone a while back just for the heck of it since not all codes set off check engine light with ford. i just told them kids left light on in back and battery went dead. they said that wwould cause it , but i dont think they where convinced. good luck, might be 1200 big ones if you need bearings.

Thanks for all the help guys! I replaced the speed output sensor on the differential today, and Ken was right (about $20). I noticed my sensor had some shavings on it, but It was not a lot. I was hoping that is from 45,484 miles of normal driving. I do not have an extended warranty on my vehicle. I thought about changing the oil in the rear end too, but I checked it and it looked clean. Any more good information is GREATLY APPRECIATED!
