[quote]Correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding the recall involves only Steeltex AT, not the Steeltex R4S.

Correct, it is limited to the Steeltex Radial A/T LT265/75R16 Load Range "D" on 2000-2002 and early 2003 Ford Excursions. The Steeltex R4SII Load Range "E" is one of the replacement tires.

If mine was a 4X4, it would be easy to opt for the BFG's. We have them on the Grand Wagoneer, they ride smooth, quiet, and still have a good tread design if you travel off-pavement.

Does anyone have experience with the Pirelli's? I'm not a fan but I've heard their truck tires are round and well balanced. They are current on 2003-2004. My only experience was a test drive in a 2003 with Scorpion STR's. I thought they rode a little harder than the Steeltex A/T's but if Ford started installing Load Range "E" tires in production, that would explain the harsher ride.

I'm not sure why you think the BFG is a better tire. If you go to The Tire Rack Link you'll see that the Pirelli Scorpion A/T has much better ratings from customers than the BFG..... especially the wet road traction (which is why I never buy Michelin's).

Sorry, but my luck with Pirelli has been all bad. Not only were the tires defective but they refused to honor their warranty...more than once. Based on recent good reports I crossed my fingers on Friday and authorized a set to replace the Firestones. Since they're free anyway, if I don't like them they'll just get replaced.

I called my Ford dealer today and he said you must have the written notification to get the tires replaced at Ford. I called Ford and they confirmed that.

The Firestone dealer said he would replace without the paper work but it makes his process go smoother with the paperwork.

As confirmed here, the replacements at Firestoneare:
1. Steeltex Radial A/T LT265/75R16 LRE
2.Steeltex Radial R4SII LR E
3 Bridgestone Duravis M77311 LR E

Duravis is a new tire and I could not find any significant info on them

The Ford replacements will be:

1. Pirelli Scorpion AT
2, Pirelli Scorpion STR
3. BFGoodtich rugged Trail A

Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of these tires.

I have seen mixed reviews on all of them (what a surprise!)

I am leaning toward the Steeltex AT, I have had good luck with tire wear but really don't have anything to compare it to on an EX.

Thanks,

Mark

I called my local ford dealer today and he is going to hook me up. He will replace the tires with what ford wants and after I take delivery of the vehicle, drive it a couple of days then return to him, he will buy back the tires at full price and sell me what I want. BFG AT's any size and I only pay the difference. He told me today that he can actually put on size 315 without a lift by moving the inner rubber piece on the vehicle and it wont bottom out. Does this sound correct? He said he does it all the time???
I will probaly go with a 295 since I have no lift.

Has anybody received notification yet? I bought my 02 used and I'm afraid that I won't get any notification.

My Ford dealer ran a VIN list for the recall, checked to see if the Excursion was on the list (it was), and promised a call as soon as tires come in. No mention of a written recall notice. I got the impression that Ford is sending each dealer an initial supply of tires based on the number of involved vehicles in their area. If you go to the Ford website, you can notify them that you now own a specific vehicle that you purchased used.

Does anyone know if Ford will replace the Firestone spare also. I am assuming Ford and Firestone don't want any of these tires on the road even if used as a spare.

I just called Ford and they told me that the program is VIN specific. So even if you don't get a letter from Firestone, that the dealer should be able to pull up the information via the VIN and honor the recall. The CSR told me to call my local Ford dealer in the middle of March.
