The ford dealership looked up my vehicle via the vin # and confirmed the recall for my tires. (As if it wasn't obvious they really were the SteelTex like the writing on the side of the tire said.)

Anyhow, they would not budge on the idea of letting me pay the difference on getting bigger tires. Firestone wouldn't either. There are two options as I see it.
1) Getting the new tires and selling them or trading them at a receptive local tire shop
2) or buying the replacements and submit for remuneration through Firestone.

Firestone said it would be about 3 weeks from the time I left my number until they contacted me and from there another 3 to 4 weeks. It looks like it will take as long as 2 months to work this route. I don't know if there are some other stipulations either like they must be original size etc.

Any better ideas to accomplish getting bigger tires in this recall program would be welcome.

I went to the firestone dealer and he is allowing me to upgrade to Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo Load range E 265/75-16, with me paying the difference (about 80 bucks for 4, I had already replaced one of my Steeltex to Load range E).

He would not allow me change the size to 285's and cited a liability isssue because it is a recall replacement.

He had to order the tires and I am scheduled to have the replacements installed Thursday March 11.

Had mine replaced today. I put in the request about a week ago. I am getting the Pirelli A/T's. They are doing all five (spare included). No questions asked.

Had mine replaced at Firestone today. Replaced 4 Steeltex with Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos. I had previously replaced the 5th tire with a load range E Steeltex after a tire problem. (now use it as the spare.) Iy cost me a little over 80 bucks to upgrade. Just after driving out of the firestone dealer ran into a big snow storm and did notice a big difference on traction and hadling compared to the Steeltex tires.

Just came back from Firestone as well with my new Dueler AT Revos. Much easier at Firestone than the dealer, no wait. Have to go back tommorrow to pick-up the new spare, they didn't think to have it at the store because people don't normally replace the spare when they get new. The Revos ride real nice, corner well, and have a nice agressive look to them. Coudn't be happier since my X had 47,350 miles and the tires were almost shot anyway. Loved looking at the dealer's reciept, $1,218.00 if not for the recall!!

Got Firestone replaced with BF Goodrich by Oasis Ford on Rt 9... I have no complaints about the tires (3 miles so far), the ride is better than the Firestones and they are pretty quiet. I did not get a letter called and spoke to the service manager, told me to bring it in as they had 40 BF's in stock but that i could get the Pirelli's if I wanted them. Chose the BF's since I am about to take a trip and didn't like the idea of having the Firestones on the truck any longer w/my daughters riding with me.

Will be going to a 18in wheel/tire combo so having the tires replaced with a 285, ETC. would have been a waste of money for me

2000 Excursion Ltd 4x4, Air Raid, Good Year 305x70x16 on stock rim, Reflex shocks, ACCER DVD system, JVC audio system, stainless steel bug shield - TRADED! Black 2003 Excursion Ltd 4x4, loaded! SWAPPED! White 2003 Excursion Eddie Bauer, loaded also! Will stay stock for the winter months ahead!

Yesterday I got my 285 Revos. Paid $185 for the upgrade and am very pleased. The ride is much smoother. Definitely worth the $.

Great that you got your 285's neil, but the recall was to correct the problem that your original 265's were load range D. The recall was to upgrade the tires to load range E because of problems. Don't see where you really accomplished anything with your new 285's in load range D.

Hey JimmyBigRig,

If you tires are already into the wear bars on the tires, I beleive you might not get new rubbers. At least demand the spare replaced.

If there is still serviceable tread on the tires even a little. Pitch a you know what at the dealer. Demand the tires replaced as high as you can go. Then next options would be call the ford customer complaint line or go to a frirestone dealer.

Also I stopped by a local tire plus store and they were doing the recall swap-out also. There might be a chance to go through a local smaller store that is doing this also. Call around.

Mine has the same mileage as yours and the dealer ordered mine and called me yesterday for me to come in for the swap.

Good Luck
