Great that you got your 285's neil, but the recall was to correct the problem that your original 265's were load range D. The recall was to upgrade the tires to load range E because of problems. Don't see where you really accomplished anything with your new 285's in load range D.

The load capacity of the 285s is 3305 lbs at 65 psi. Pleanty for the vehicle and 2000 lb pop-up camper I tow. A 285 tire has a higher load capacity than a 265 tire of the same model. Does anyone know the load capacity of the 265 Revo, load range E?
P.S. Firestone and Ford will probably argue out the problem. Firestone blaming the wrong load rating and Ford saying bad tires. I think after the Explorer problems I know which is the problem. |

Just brought my car to my local Ford dealer, Village Ford in Ridgewood, NJ. They had to inspect the car first and then tell me if I qualified or not for the recall. They made me make an appointment and everything. After all that, they confirmed that I do qualify, but they have to order the tires. I asked them if I get to choose from a list of tires to get. The rep told me that I don't get a choice and it's whatever they send him. They said that they already had 4 others on order with no ETA. I should've gone to a Firestone center instead.
People, don't forget to re-torque all the lug nuts to the proper specs after the tires are replaced! |

Hey Watchintv,
Hey the website says your choice. I would go back and specify what you want out of the optional replacements. Don't take that unless you are really unconcerned with what you get. Some other tire stores like tiresplus in fl are doing the recall stuff and they also give you a choice. Check around if you can't get anywhere with your dealer. I would get it straightened out with the dealer if I could
Good Luck. |

My understanding is that the Ford Dealer has two choices of tires -- they either get the BF Goodrich Rugged Trails or the Pirelli's. My dealer wasn't even sure he'd get the Pirelli's since there aren't that many tire distributors who carry them in the Twin Cities. I'd get to either a Firestone or Tires Plus dealer and start working with them. The first Firestone dealer I talked to insisted that he wouldn't put Bridgestone Revos on for an additional fee. The second dealer was willing to do that and I ended up with 5 new Revos for $30 per tire. BOTTOM LINE -- don't settle for whatever the Ford Dealer is willing to do.

Thanks for the information. I'll call the dealer and let them know. I think I want to go with the Pirelli. |

I research the tires and looked at owners comments on the tirerack.com site and the revos looked like the choice for me. My thoughts were confirmed further after the ease at which I was able to have them replaced (one day). The deal was sealed yesterday when we got 6" of snow. I tried 4 different conditions from full snow on pavement, full snow on gravel, slush on pavement, and just wet. From a dead stop, mashing the accellerator, the only slippage was 1/4 turn on the gravel ... IN TWO WHEEL DRIVE !!!!
I'm not saying this is the tire choice for everyone, but you can't go wrong with the Revos in my mind.
Just a note, there is not a consistant pay-up to the Revos. I've now seen everything from 20 per tire to 30 per tire. I paid $28 per tire flat rate ($140 for all 5). I would have paid $50 and still been happy>

I also must say how impressed I am with the Revos in the snow. Typically larger tires are worse in the snow but, these are much better than the Firebombs. From a stop in the snow, the Steeltex would lose traction and shoot the rearend to the right. The Revos keep gripping and propel the X forward. Two wheel drive with the Revos seemed almost like 4wd with the Firestones.
If you want a 70,000+ mile tire, then stick with the Steeltex. If you want an improved ride and improved traction, go with the Revos and pay for the upgrade.
I believe my ride improvement is a combination of the larger tire and the Revo construction. Obviously, I don't know which is more significant. If I would have gotten in my X and not known what was changed, I would have thought the new shocks were put on. This is with 50 psi front and 55 psi rear.
Also, the local dealer quoted me $44 to reprogram the computer for the larger tires. Has anyone else had this done? Is it worth it? |

I went to my Ford dealer and got the run around about appointments, checking the VIN, ordering the tires that would arrive someday which would be Pirelli's when they did arrive. I called my local Firestone store and he told me he would put a new set of Revo's on for free and a Steeltex spare and he had them in stock and would do it as soon as I arrived. I did pay an extra $30 and had the spare put on as a Revo too. The Firestone store was corporate owned by Firestone; I think the corporate stores can be more flexible than an independent Firestone garages.
Mileage Concerns:
My original tires were worn out and I had 49,992 miles on them and was about to replace them, the Firestone manager didn't care. I think Firestone wants these off the road no matter how old the tire is or how many miles the Excursion has on it. If a dealer won't replace the tires because of being over 50,000 miles, I would ask them to show me in writing where the recall states that information and have them put it in writing.
So far, I like the Revo's.

Spoke to two firestone stores. First said I could only get steeltex replacements.. ...no, no, no. Called another local dealer and OK no problem. They tried to work on some Revo 285's. Firestone wouldn't go for it, but did agree to go for 5 Revo 265's free of charge!!!!! I'll take that one to the bank!!!!! |
