I got the recall notice for the 2000 Excursion and here's what the call to Tousley Ford in MN (the largest Ford dealership in MN) yeilded.
I told the service guy that when the truck was bought last fall that it had brand new stock size Goodyears on it (104K miles third set of tires?). He said he would need to look at the spare to see if it was one of the ones recalled. I told him I put the rims/tires from the F250 on the Excursion, BFG's ATKO's 33's on Ford AR Atlas rims. Then he said he couldn't help me due to the X not having stock size tires and the federal government will not allow them replacing the spare with a different size tire on the truck. He said I better get a 33 inch spare, he claimed running a stock tire as a spare can ruin the 4x4 system.
He said Ford or Firestone will not reimburse for people who have had the tires replaced prior to the recall and said there was no option for upgrading for aditional $ for larger tires, federal government would not allow it. Also he claimed that nobody has yet to come in and get there free tires, perhaps us northerners drive to much and have already replaced them.
We started talking diesels and it seemed he did not know what he was talking about. He mentioned some guys claim to get 20 mpg with the powerstroke which he could not beleive. I told him I got 18.9 mpg on the last trip and he said I must have had a real strong tail wind.
When I mentioned www.thedieselstop.com and here he said you can't beleive anything on either site, regarding to when I told him people were getting reimbursed for tires and being able to upsize for an additional cost.
This is from a service tech at the largest sales Ford dealership in MN.
So how many people on here have gotten either reimbursed or been able to upgrade tires?

I'm sure glad I keep tabs on this site.
Went to the local ford dealer and asked about the tire replacement and they didn't have a shmick or didn't want to. Not sure which. Just a waste of time.
Soooooo..... off to the local firestone dealer I went. There was no fuss, no muss.
They were only concerned that the tires were not totaly worn out.
Got all 5 tires on order and I finally get rid of the raised white lettering.
And not a penny out of my pocket.
Story goes, someone (ford or firestone) put the wrong tires on at the factory.
Seems its not a good idea to put passenger car tires on a truck. Nuff said.
Another story goes:
The explorer tire issue was apparently due to the fact that Firestone had a strike on and used salaryed people to make the tires to keep ford supplied instead of the guys who knew what they were doing. Had there been no problems arise ( Road deaths ect) no one would have noticed. Nuff said again.
I was just thinking the other day that i had better start thinking about a new set of tires within the next couple of years or so since Ive got 58k miles on these ones. Man.. this just makes my day.

I took my 00 x to Ford dealer for a recall about the wiper cover and they they replaced all tires including the spare. At that time I only had two original Steel tex tires, but they replaced all of them any way.

I got my card for replacement in the mail but I sold the tires and upsized last year. I called about the reimbursement 2 weeks ago and am waiting for the paperwork they promised to send. Has anyone been reimbursed after they bought other tires? Is there any reason that you have to give in order to get reimbursed? ie.. tires went bad, blew out, looked too small so I bought bigger ones! |

I got my new tires on today and they sure look nice.
no charge for the tires, the install or the balancing. ( the spare too)
I love it.:-)
Never got any notification from ford though and that sucks.
The local dealership never fails to let us know when our cars are due up for maintenance but we have yet to get any info on recalls or what ever. And when I go over to ask about them its like I just asked them to give up their kids for adoption.

I went to a Brentwood CA. Ford dealer and they told me that my VIN did not qualify for replacements.
This is a 2000 Limited EX with 16,000 miles. They said I had the right tires for recall but that some serial number on the tire was wrong and that the tires I had were fine. These are load range D Steeltex in the right size. They did the windshield wiper box, but refused to do the tires.
Should I try another Ford Dealer or would I have better luck at a Firestone Tire Dealer? |

I believe you should have received a letter in the mail from Ford if you do qualify. I replaced mine due to wear a while back so my replacements aren't eligible. Wish they were, though.... Michelin LTX M/S LR-E at almost $160/

I had the same tires on my 2000 X and had them replaced at a Firestone dealer with new Bridgestone Revo's. I don't recall the VIN being a consideration on the replacement, they just want the tires off of the road. I would try a Firestone shop to see what they say.

I had a set of REVO's put on my 2003 and all I can say is WOW what a difference! HUGE improvement in both ride quality and noise level. Firestone charged me $25 per tire to upgrade to the REVO's and it was worth every penny.

Well, I got shafted (a bit)...
In Nov 2003, I got rid my Steeltex AT's and replaced them with Yokohama Geolanders. My Ex is a 4x2, and I don't need ATs, but the AT's rode so bad, and looked bad, and the side walls were peeling, and I've always been afraid of them blowing up... I really like the Geolanders. Got the 285/75-16 size. They are great for the street/hiway!
Fast forward to Feb 2004, and we all hear about the recall. I hit the FAQ on the Bridgestone/Firestone web site and read that if I replaced the tires for reasons other than wear after March 2003, them I am eligible to submit a claim for reimbursement. I call the 800 #, and I get put on a list, and two weeks later I get instructions in the mail on how to submit my claim. Part of the claim is to include the "Limited Warranty Adjustment Form". I don't have one, so I call the 800 # and explain this, and the nice lady said not to worry about it and that other customers are calling in saying the same thing - just send in the receipt with you VIN number. So I do just that (well, a copy of my receipt).
Yesterday I get a letter in the mail from B/F stating that my claim has been denied, 'cause I didn't include the "Limited Warranty Adjustment Form". So, I call the 800 # (again!) and explain everything above. The B/F rep tells me that without that form the claim is denied, that I should have taken my Ex to the local B/F dealer and demanded a "warranty adjustment", and that since I chose to replace my tires, then that way my choice and not B/F's responsibility. He was really rude about it, too. Then I asked this bozo about my "defective" spare - what's B/F gonna do about that? And he proceeds to tell me that B/F would gladly replace it with an "E" rated Steeltex. I tell him, "Great, you're gonna exchange one useless tire for another. If I do that, will B/F buy back my 'unused', new E tire? It's useless to me..." And he gives me more grief - he asks, "So what would you have done if you had a flat tire yesterday?" What a freaking jerk...
From this experience, I'm convinced that B/F is not a company with which I want to do business again. I'm really disappointed that I bot Bridgestone tires for my Mustang a couple of years ago.
Anyway, I'll go visit the local B/F dealer to see what he can do about my spare - at least buy back my unused "E" tire for a reasonable amount...
Thanks for letting me ramble. All I wanted was some kinda reimbursement. I wasn't expecting 100%, but maybe 25% or 33%. (and, yes, I told the bozo that too).
Regards,
