I am considering Firestone Destinations m-t 285/75/16 tires for my 2000 Limited. These are "mudder tires" has anyone heard anything about them? I like there looks but I also tow a 33' camper and believe they will still be o.k.

Hey Marshall,

Johnboy is right they need to be load range E. The Firstone Destinations only come in LT23585R16 and LT24575R16 for that range. The 235s would work OK but there a really narrow looking tire.

I would look at the following:

BFgoodrick Rugger Trail (stock on 2003 X)

Or

NittoTerra Grappler

If you want to see what 235 85R16 look like on the X take a look at the "POWERBUS" in my photo album under my name GEN-X.

I use these tires for winter.

The Destinations are load range D, same as stock tires, I'm a little new at the load range thing, will this not work for what I have to tow. I previously towed my 33' camper with a 97 Ford Expedition?

Having the load range D was the problem with the old tires. The Excursion by itself requires the load range E which means 10 ply tires, D are only 8ply.

The load range is explained better at the below link:
http://www.dualport.com/bustech/load_tires.html

Pulling a trailer only adds more weight on to the tires! Keep in mind the X is 2000lbs or (1ton) heavier than the Expedition. You need E range! don't get anything else unless FORD will stand behind it!

Check out the Bridgestone Dueler Revo. I just had these installed on my X. Read all of the good comments on the Tire Rack site. My Firestone dealer put these on for me for the recall.

That's a bit of a generalization. All D load rated tires do not carry the same weight. Plus, they are not truly 8 ply (or E's 10 ply). If I remember correctly there only actually 4 plys. The old "ply" rating had to do with older cotton ply tires. It is an old rating system that has (is slowly in the public's mind) been replaced with the letter designation.

Look at the side wall of the prospective tire purchase. Make sure that they can safely carry the GCWR at a NON-max pressure. And that the Max pressure load capacity exceeds the GCWR by a safe margin...say 10-15%.

A Firestone A/T D rated tire can support over 3000lbs per tire at MAX pressure. That greatly exceeds the "load at ground" capacity of the Sterling rear axle.

Problem was the tire pressure prescribed (too low) and the shitty construction of the tires. Not the load rating being D.

Ken,
I stand corrected, I didn't realize load range D would support that much weight.
Thanks for setting my straight.

Ok...I just left Firestone and the manager told me they are clearing out the Dueler AT6793 II for $110 per tire ($579.00 for 4 installed). This is a "D" rated 285/75/16 tire. I have read the comments posted above. I drive on the road only 60% city and 40% highway.

For the next year I will not tow anything other than my wife, 1 year old twins, 12 year old daughter and her friends. I currently have the Steeltex "E" rated 265/75/16 tire. My primary concern is quiet ride and rain and snow traction.

First...do I want this the AT693 II tires? Is this a good deal? What happens when I move up to 285s?

Or should I buy the newest Dueler AT Revo at $876.00 installed.

Or just stick with my Steeltex?

Any opinions are greatly appreciated. I am limited on my tire knowledge.
