I have an 03 6l PSD that is behaving erratically. Three weeks ago it lost power [10-20%?] and vibrated badly at around 1800 rpm but really badly at 45-50 mph at that engine speed. Acceleration was not as strong. It only lasted for the 30 minute drive home from work. The next day I started it up and everything was fine.

Yesterday an annoying vibration began occurring at idle [~700 rpm]. Idle speed has not changed since I bought it new. Performance is again 10-15% less [seat of the pants feel; just doesn't accelerate as quickly].
It is still running like that this morning.

This is my first diesel ownership experience. I've had water in the fuel in a gasoline engine [4 cylinder jap bike, 350V8 Mercury inboard] so I know what it's like. In a gasoline though, I'd say power is off by 50% at least; much more noticeable than what I notice in my PSD currently.

- I've never let the fuel level go below 1/2 tank so as to minimize the opportunity for condensation to form.
- I fill up at a station that [I think] has a decent turnover of their diesel fuel tank.
- Both times the issue occurred when water was involved.
-First time is when I lightly and quickly sprayed the engine compartment with a fine mist from the garden hose; didn't douse it, just enough to rinse the dirt off, avoided the alternator and other black boxes.
- Second time was driving through first considerable rainfall for the year.

Noticed in other threads about having to drain both water trap filters on a monthly basis [didn't realize this, was relying upon the idiot light to tell me when to do this].

Does water in the tank sound like the culprit?

Is there a diesel-equivalent like the dry gas additive for gasoline engines?

Drained the water accumulator next to the tranny, no water.

Took it to the dealer, at least one bad fuel injector, maybe more. Said I have an early 2003 model that are known to have injectors that go bad within first 3k miles.

In my opinion it does not sound like a water issue although bleeding/draining water out regularly is a good idea. I have 31,000 on mine and not a drop of H2O.

How many miles on the X? Have you replaced the fuel filter? One semi bad tank will clog you're filter quicker than you can say power stroke. This can restrict fuel so bad the injectors are starved for fuel causing a sporadic rough engine.

I have a 7.3 PSD in my X and she will let me know when the filters are dirty. She is robbed of power and the exhaust temps start to climb, runs rough, etc. I change my fuel filter every 2 months and rotate a K&M air filter every 4-5 fillups, it just keeps her tip top.

For fuel additive Ford and the Techs that I have delt with recommend Stanadyne, http://www.stanadyne.com/dsg/dsg_dfa.asp. This tends be a hard to get item unless you're local to a truck stop.

If you feel or are concerned of geling issues below 25 degress Diesel Kleen can be picked up at your local Walmart.

I've got 2900 miles on my X.

Got it back today. It was one bad fuel injector, was 2 software upgrades behind, and they also replaced the turbo, said it was possible the turbo got gummed up. Whatever. It runs like a champ again.
