Well, I've been doing my research about lifts and in doing so have come upon numerous possibilities. One of these is to go a bit higher than I originally wanted to because it costs about the same. However, this would require bigger tires. 37's to be exact which is the size I'd like anyway.
So, my question is, what do you guys think 37x12.5x16.5 tires would look like on an X? I can get a pretty darn good deal on Hummer tires...the military tread pattern. Any comments or suggestions?

I've seen an Excursion with those size wheels and HUMMER tires!! (The second Generation, not the early bias-plies) It looked great! I say go for it and get some pics to us!
But I would also strongly consider re-gearing if I were you. That's some big $$$!!

you will lose power with that tire size.your trans will probably shift a little later, your torque converter will hate you.your speedo will be off.you will look very good, but you wont like the performance.

Weatherlite,
I looked in your gallery and I see you have the factory 4.30 gears. I don't think you'll have a problem going to the 37's. I think everyone assumed you had the standard 3.73 gear ratio!

You'll be about 40rpm less than me (stock 3.73 & stock tires) at 70mph in OD. I'm sure you can live with that!

Just wondering if you were talking about the 37" Goodyear GSA or the MT's? I was running the GSA AT's for a while. Great tire and not much tire noise. I got a great price on a buy back (long story) for about $150.00 a piece! They will fill the wheel well with a 6" lift with minor front fender cutting.

Been thinking long and hard on this one. I love 37's but I'd have to change the rim size! This is a tough decision.
And yes, these are the new style MT radials, not the 36" bias ply.
I do have the 4.30 gears so it wouldn't be bad at all. I did some calculations and 35's would act exactly as if I had 3.73 gears. I figure 37's would be just a bit higher "geared" (numerically lower). I know the speedo would be off but I've also seen a few products that can fix that supposedly.
Either way, 35's or 37's, I just hope that these help with mileage as an added benefit. Also, why would trimming be needed? I've heard of lots of people going this big with a 6" and not needing trimming.
And these are new for 150...I can get a decent tire with a little more than 1/2 tread left for around 80 each. Good deal?
Thanks!

With the wider tire I would suggest a 9.75 to 10" wheel. I think you were thinking about a 6" lift? With that lift and the 37's you may indeed need to either shim out the front bumper a little or trim the valence and maybe the bumper a touch to prevent any rubbing at full lock. As far as better gas milage... I doubt it! Your going to have increased unsprung weight with the larger tires and wheels.

I was figuring the reduced engine speed would help to increase the highway milage. I know that city might go down a tad because of the increase in rolling weight but the highway should go up because of the reduced RPM. Right now at 65 with everything stock it's about 2300 RPM. Cruising down to Boise at 82MPH is almost 2800RPM! If I can get that down I should see some increase I hope!
Also, anyone know of a good site to look for rims? |
