I posted htis on another board, and I'm intersted in hearing more...

I'm looking for some feedback from those that are towing significant weight with stock suspension 4x4. What I'm curious about is if you have significant weight, properly equipped (WD etc.) what does your front suspension look like? I'm looking for a comparison of spring travel while stock and unloaded and what heavy weight does to the suspension travel?

The dealer contacted Ford and I was simply told "it's normal" and "within spec". Mine seems to have settled a little on the passenger side, so now I'm at about 1/2" and 1" clearance in spring to bump stop. Ride height is technicly within tolerance, but I can't imagine Ford would agree that bottoming out during normal driving is normal. Put 400-500# on the frame and it's riding on the bumps I'm sure. It is a safety issue to me!

Suspention isn't suspension if it doesn't have room to, suspend.

Tim,

Sounds like your tongue weight it to heavy!!!

I tow a 9000 lb boat and don't have problems at all. My tongue weight it 300-400lbs. At one time I was exceeding 700 lbs with double axel trailer. I sold the double axel and purchased a triple. Now, on the road she is a little less tame and bouncy than without the trailer but cruising 70+ mph down I95 is no problem.

I would have the tongue weight checked, if off or too heavy, re balance the load on the trailer. Tongue weight should not exceed 500 lbs. as that is multiplied when hitting bumps and braking.

Let me clarify. This is with nothing hooked up or loaded. I did hook up the boat at one time but didn't look under the front end. The clearance is sitting as it did off the transport...

The bad thing is the passanger side seems to have settled slightly so now the diff is only about 1/2" to 5/8" which is within spec for ride height. The clearance of 1/2" to 1" betwen the spring and bump stop just does sit right with me. Pardon the pun.

The lack of travel in the front suspension is a problem with all stock Excursions.

The bumpstops are an actual part of the suspending process (believe it or not!) Best "fix" is an uprated set of springs on the front.
