I hope I have posted this in the correct forum. Well, I went out and did it! Two weeks ago I bought a 2000 2WD, 7.3 PSD after drooling ever since they came out . It has 138,000 miles, but the price was right. I found some old repair receipts in the glove box and it looks like the previous owner took pretty good care of the truck and it seems to be stock, although I haven't looked for a chip yet. I've been studying this forum for the last 2 days and have not seen a discussion of my problem, but that doesn't mean I didn't overlook it (failing memory, doncha know). My problem is this, when I apply power AND turn at the same time, I get this shudder in the drivetrain that seems to be under my butt. If I pull out straight, there is no problem. But say I pull out from a 4-way stop and turn left (and it does seem more pronounced in a left turn, but appears in both directions) it shows up. Also, there is this vibration from about 58mph to 65mph. It seems too fast a frequency to be unbalanced tires. Somewhere I read about putting shims under the axle blocks to raise the front of the differential to better align the driveshaft geometry? Correlation here? I do know that in Nov of 02 at 110,000 miles, the tranny was serviced with 'BG flush-Mercon 5' according to the invoice. Anyone have a clue? If this has been discussed before, please point me toward the thread. |

I had the same vibration that you describe and it ended up being the driveshaft. The shaft needed to be rebalanced and repacked with grease. The spline looses the grease over time, with no grease it seems to have movement.
The other issue sounds like a 4WD drive axle issue but you own a 2wd. Do you know if the truck was towing a lot? The problem could also be worn out U joints.

Since my last post, I have found out that the rear diff was serviced about 8,000 mile ago with new lube and conditioner added. I got the truck back today from my mechanic (an independant with about 30 years experience) and he could find nothing. Said the U joints looked OK. But my first thought was U joints. I did notice that it does do it less tonight. If what you say is true, then it would make sense in that if the truck was on a lift and the rear axle hung down, that the driveshaft would 'extend' some off the spline. In driving around looking for RAV 4's to vanquish , it would work its way back and start over again. I do suspect that it did some towing in the past as there is an electric trailer brake installed. But I don't know how much of what. Any suggestions as to where to go next to have the driveshaft and U joints checked out? |

Sorry for the delay, went on vacation and didn't have access to a pc.
Find a local drive shaft comany if you can or a shop that can check balence the shaft and repack the grease in the spline. To replace the U joints is about $35.00 each and with your milage and the known quality of the u joint Ford installs would not hurt at all.
