I tow a 9,000# Toy hauler in hill country with my Y2K, V-10. I am trying to get clarification if I will cause harm to the tranny if I tow with the over drive in the on position? Please help in clarifing my concern.

Do not tow in the OD position, it puts too much strain on the torque converter unless you have a heavyduty converter with shuft kit.

The Excursion has the same tranny that comes in the motorhome chassis. Are the motorhome owners told NOT to use OD while driving? Don't think so. I use mine when towing ... then again, I'm only pulling about 5,200#. Use it. Stop using it when the tranny attempts to "search" (downshift) frequently in certain terrains. |

We are also NOT told to jump off tall buildings. Common sense will bale you out every time.  The Ford converter can barely hold an F250 empty; add 10k pounds with a motorhome and you are over straining it. I am not saying that evey motor home that tows in OD will fail, and neither will every X that tows in OD. I guess, not everyone that jumps off a tall building will die. The odds are against you. I am just trying to help people keep their trans longer. Common sense folks; you won't be sorry. If you could put another 20-50K miles on your trans before overhaul, thats money in your bank.
