I was killing time yesterday at the local BMW/Mercedes/Volvo dealer (across the street from my son's gymnastics place) and happened to look at a Volvo XC90 they had on the lot. It was pretty sweet. I was actually drawn in by the "third row" seats. Two seats fold flat into the floor and then unfold into the upright position with minimal effort. They had their own seatbelt attached to the seat back and headrests, too. Very slick. The middle row is, of course, smaller than the Excursion, but still roomy for two adults or three kids. The one I looked at had a light green metallic exterior and beige leather seats. It is AWD and, get this, has an inline six with twin turbos
I am a bit smitten, true, but not tempted. The sticker price of $46k sort of dampened the enthusiasm a little. Actually, the biggest disappointment is the estimated mpg. Only 15 city/21 highway. And premium gas for the turbos to boot. That is what most PSD X owners report Now, if they put a TDI engine (like the VW Toureg has) in it, then we might have something.
Overall, some neat ideas, but not enough to convert me.

Yummy...
Can't wait to see that V10 diesel in the Toureg. I could never own one since I can't fit 4 kids in it but ti is nice to dream...
Those Volvos are nice. Unibody SUVs aren't really my thing but Volvo has some really nice build quality.

Yup, I've got three and the Toureg is just too narrow for three car seats. I liked the third row seats in the Volvo. Very slick.
I would really be interested in a midsize SUV with three rows and a diesel engine. I don't need the heavy duty capability of the Excursion, but I do need seats.
I wonder if any other car-makers will bring diesels to the US market after low-sulfer diesel gets here in/after 2006? Maybe a Honda Pilot with a light duty diesel. Or a Ford Explorer with a small diesel. Or a........

All reports say that Ford will have a light duty diesel in the F150 in the next year or so.
I'd look for it in a stretch Expedition (or even a normal sized one) shortly thereafter.

I heard that they canceled that project due to inability to pass the emissions testing. Who knows.

Actually heard that Detriot Diesel has emission compliant diesel V6s that'll fit.
Ford and International broke up the "baby PSD" deal due to that and International 6.0L fiasco. Ford is actively pursuing some other companies to supply them with light"er" duty diesels for the F150 line.

Giddy up! I would love to have a Super Crew that could get 30 mpg or so. That would be a great errand runner.

actually, ford is using a 2 liter diesel in the new ford bronco. Small utility, weighs in at 3100lbs, 2 door and the top comes off. Look for it in 12 months. |

I just don't get it, doesn't RS-TX get it yet? this
this is a Ford Forum not a " VW OR VOLVO Forum" by the way
VW and Volvos get devalueted, a volvo or a vw a year after
they ended up costing half of what you paid for, that goes for

Hi, Martin. Thanks for the info. I very much enjoyed my Excursion while I owned it, but I don't miss it. My needs changed, and the Jetta does everything I need to do. I'll probably get a bigger vehicle in a few years as my children grow, and it will probably be a Ford. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the excellent mileage and wonderful road manners afforded by my VW.
Have a great day.
P.S. Who is this Martin guy, and why is he on my case?
