My oil pressure gauge says good, but I see some oil underneath. I checked the dipstick and with the engine off, it looks empty, with engine on, it's above full. Am I doing something wrong? Also getting ready to change the oil. Anyone have a good brand to use?

You have an oil leak that needs to be fixed.
If you don't have any oil on the stick when its not running you need a lot of oil.
When you check the oil the engine should be stopped. You see oil on the stick when its running because it splashes around.
You have oil pressure because you still have oil at the bottom of the pan which is where the oil pick up is.
When you change the oil dont forget the oil filter and be sure the oil rating is the correct one for the ambiant temperatures you are going to be running in.
Brand is your choice. If it meets the spec's, oil is oil.
Dave.

For what it's worth, My X had a bad washer on the oilpan drain plug, allowing it to leave little, nasty puddles wherever it was parked. I replaced the washer with a teflon one, and it's all good now! |

Hi Chris do you have the owners manual for you truck? If so read it, it will explain a lot of things real well. To be perfectly honest without sounding like a jerk, if you did not know that you should only check the engine oil with the engine turned off, you might be better off having a shop do your oil changes for you. I would just hate for a small mistake to cost you a ton of money.
