Well as you can tell I am the new guy. We have two kids both me & the wife are rather tall me 6ft3 & she 5ft8. Lately we have been looking for a suv/car that
A. we could fill like we are not jammed into
B. could handle the snow, rain & very rough weather
C. long miles on the road we dont fly. (both kids are under 5)
D. haul everyone including friends (nothing worse the 2 cars for 6 flags)
We did the math & found out what we are spending on gas right now we would be about even as far as PSD. cause of the price on average is about 5 to 10cents cheaper then gas. Taken a few test drives & so far we know this.
XLT package , 4X4 . pds 7.3 looking used i dont want to take that 18k hit of deperciation (SP?)
now to the qsts.
how many miles should i be looking at when it comes to a 01-02 PSD
what are some things i should know to get ahead of the dealers? I read where the 7.3 comes with a 100k transferable Warenty ?
The tranny is suspect to major work at 100k ?
Thought i read somewhere that the PSD 6.0 has a few problems & should be avoided?
My reasons for the 4x4 is mostly snow & camping we will be moving back north by the end of the year.A 9k pd SUV does it really need to be 4x4 for the my needs? I will not being doing any heavy duty off roading but will be in about 8inches of snow from time to time.( kinda thinking ill need 4 low for that )
Any help clues or thoughts wuold be great.

Corpus.... in the Navy ?
My nephew just left there for Fallujah about a month ago... his wife is still on base there...

When we visited there, my wife couldn't stay off the beaches !!! and we have the BEST sunset picture Ever from there - we were at this hole in the wall seafood place on the south end of the big bridge and the bay out west of us... STUNNING...will put it in the gallery cuz I don't know how to post it in line...
loved that the Ex went up and down them without a problem...

Can't help with the snow-worthiness...
but logic (and guessing) tells me that a heavier vehicle, with the correct tires, would have better traction than a lighter one ...
the Ex would Make it's own road traction rut

and as far as a travelling vehicle - you can't beat it !!
getting ready for our fourth long trip in 11 months in it...

i work from home so have NO commute mileage on it... just run around dfw in it at night and on weekends and the trips... but still have 24K+ miles on it in those 11 months...

I got an '01 PSD X last December and it had 36,000 miles on it, I think. I paid in the neighborhood of 26K. Helluva deal if you ask me, strictly from a 'value' perspective.

Love my X. I have 4 kids and we use it hard EVERY weekend...hauling bikes and scooters and balls and whatnot.

Regarding the snow, we had about 8 inches a few times this year and my X did great in 4x4 high. I did try a few times to see how it did just in 2x4 and I have to say it slipped a little here and there - but then again we get a lot of ice with our snows, here..but heck - get the 4x4. The few times you need it will well be worth the extra money in my opinion, and if you're moving up north, there will surely be times you need to drive over a little drift...or get stopped on a slipperly incline, etc.

Look for an '01 with 30 - 60K miles on it. I remember seeing some rusty ones when I was shopping but ended up buying a vehicle that was from the south - so no rust.

Good luck and go for the PSD growl. That's worth the purchase, in and of itself

'01 X Limited w/PSD - STOCK all the way..and plan to stay that way. Pockets turned inside out with 4 kids!

Drive Drive Drive the beast before you buy.
Look for front end shudder when you hit the brakes. Look for u-joint Rumble.
Look for a vehicle that has been maintained and has the reciepts to show what was done when.

Have a qualified, trustworthy mechanic take a look down under.
Ujoints, BRAKE PADS/ROTORS, exaust, rusty oil pan, coroded parking brake cable and weak spring on the parking brake pedal. ( this will cause the pedal not to return to the full up position causing your cruise control to drop out unexpectedly. Its supposed to drop out when you hit the brakes or parking brake.

And if in doubt. Buy a new one.

Dave.

May be the best advice Dave gave you ...
if possible financially...
there are a TON of incentives on new...
there are cheap interest rates on new...
and a warranty... even extended if you want...

but I understand you can get one that someone else has taken the new car depreciation on...

good luck,
but get one soon - they are GREAT vehicles...

I bought a 2000 2wd Ltd last month with 134.000 miles for less than $18k. There were some maintenance receipts that seem to indicate that it had been taken care of. The truck looked real good and I didn't find anything I was afraid of, especially since it was a diesel. SPEND SOME TIME HERE AND AT DIESELSTOP.COM REVIEWING THE FORUMS and run a CARFAX report. Look for a one owner as opposed one with multiple owners who were planning to trade in a year and didn't care about maintanence. Things to look for; a chip (could be good or bad), tranny service records (make sure there is no Mercon V, you want only Mercon), front ball joints and u joints with grease fittings (shows that they have been replaced already, also there is an additive that needs to be added to the differential), coolant additive (or go to Diesel Injection Service and get the test strips and check yourself), the front brake rotors are prone to 'warping' so you will most likely experience shudder when braking (there are aftermarket rotors and pads that will cure this and you should plan on getting them), if you find one with a pyrometer gauge-buy it (someone knew what they were doing and took steps to protect it). As far as 4x4 vs. 4x2, I don't know how far north you are going and I have not been in snow yet, but we had freezing rain here in Indiana a week after I bought it and I didn't slip a bit. I think that a good set of tires like Bridgestone Revo's or Terragrippers (or even a set of winter specific tires) might work just as well and alleviate the 4wd maintanence issues. I'm of the school 'simpler is better'. Sorry for the long post, but hope my $0.02 is of some help.
