I want to know what I can do to help my 2001 Excursions some what soft suspension.
I have found that I have one bad shock in the rear, that has lost its charge. Ford will replace this for without any problems. But i know that I really need to change the stock shocks to something better.
Is the best thing to do change the shocks or help out the soft leafsprings?
I need some advice on this.
Also want to say thanks to Monsta for his picture for installing the sway bar. Could not have done it with out them.

I think the pictures you are referring to are from Eric Long maybe??
I do not think that I ever posted pictures of my installation. If so, make sure you thank him or whomever else was "responsible".
About your question. I would first upgrade your shocks before upgrading your springs. Cheaper and easier. There are some Rancho RS9000s on ebay right now.

Birdman,
You lost me a little here, did you replace the front leaf springs with a set from a 2003 f-250?
I have a 2001 PSD 4x4 which seams to bottom out some or suffer from a soft front suspension. I don't really want to lift the truck up anymore just stiffen the ride some. Would just changing the shocks all around cure this?

Yes, I replaced the front springs on the X because the springs are to soft and ride on the bump stops!

I hope you can make your self happy with the replacement of your shocks! I wasn't so I replaced the front springs and boy how much better they ride! No more bone charring jolts from the front end.

Excursions are set for a "smooth" ride & lower ride height compared to their SD brethern. Because of that we got a wallowy, soft sprung whale. Improved dampening (shocks) will work wonders but as many have done, increasing spring rates will also do wonders.
Even though the dampening rates can be firmed up with quality shocks, the Excursion (especially the front) suffers from a lack of compression travel. Changing the springs will goive you more travel but will also raise the front end. The chart above shows the appropriate "code" (e.g. U, V, W etc.) and what effect it will have on ride height. I also shows it capacity.
If you do not want to raise the height of your truck, then change shocks but also take a look at swapping out the front bumpstops to the new design (All 2003's). They do not have the initial bone jarring impact as the old style ones.

Thanks guys, this is what kind of info I needed.
What is the estimated cost of changing the springs in the front?
I will start with the shocks then look at changing the springs later maybe.

keep a eye on the classifieds here and at http://www.fordtrucks.com or at http://www.thedieselstop.com. You can also ask your local 4x4 shop if they have any "ford" factory springs laying around.

I've copied a few posts from this thread. I'm very interested in trying this spring upgrade on my v10 X. I'm currious, on Ken's chart, do these height changes apply to the entire vehicle if all four corners are replaced? And has anyone done this wishing they haven't? I'm also currious to know, if any, have used the upper end spring codes for their X, 10 or PSD. I appreciate any response, and sorry if awakening this thread causes inconvenience. Thanks for the search hint Scott, glad I found this thread.
