I use my X to tow extensively. I tow about #8000. At 30,000 mi, the tranny would not go into reverse or overdrive. Dealer stated 'tranny bad' and replaced it. I am now at 59,000 mi and while towing, tranny fluid started leaking out of the bell housing onto the exhaust. My fluid level did not drop significantly and after letting her cool down, the leak stopped. I was able to continue on home (30 miles) and by the time I pulled in the driveway, the leak was back, but this time I lost enough fluid that I needed to add a quart.
Since the leak is comming from the bell housing, I am guessing either a front seal or a leak in the TC. Any ideas??? Needless to say, I plan to either strengthen the existing tranny, based on what I find....or replace with a beefed-up aftermarket rebuild. AND no matter what I do, I will install a tranny temp gauge! |

Quick update on my leaky 4r100 transmission. I removed it from the Excursion without too much problem. I found out that the forward pump seal on the TC must have given way. I could see on the TC sealing surface that it was not rubbing or sealing around the entire surface. It also looks like the TC was moving back and forth. I don't have the pump apart yet, but I bet the bushing that holds the TC from moving back and forth is also gone. Talking to several outfits, chances are I overheated, had some movement of the TC and caused the seal to give out.
My current plans are to strengthen the tranny with aftermarket parts....since I don't want to take the tranny out again any time soon. I think I might go with Level Ten stuff. I will be able to get the firm shifts I have always wanted and upgrade the TC to something that will handle some of the engine mods I have made. AND I will not forget a tranny oil temp gauge. I will probably put in an A-pillar gauge pod with some Autometer or Stewart Warner gauges and make sure this will not happen again. |
