Is it a pain?

I'm considering putting on the black wheel lip & body molding from the all black Excursion. Just curious how hard it is to remove what's on there.

If you've removed the beige molding and it's in good shape...well...drop me an email!

Been thinking about going to the No Bound look, bumpers and molding, I`ve got the tan, don`t like it. I don`tknow if it`s cheaper to paint the molding or buy new. i`m just going to buy new bumpers, front has a ding but my plastic good. I can`t do anything till work picks up around here. Are you in a hurry to do this before you go? If not, you will be going by here on your way west, maybe work something out.

I'd say it is cheaper to paint your existing molding. What color is the body of your truck now?

A problem with bumpers you should be aware of...pre-painted factory bumper are outlandishly priced, chrome bumpers take more in prep to paint (labor $$) than to paint them and XL bumpers from the SD do not have the holes for the lower fascia.

I am going with a fully painted XL bumper with no plastic on it. Don't read need the protection from salt and sand living in HI.

I'm not in a hurry but I may just see what the price is from the black molding is from the dealer. Plus, I decided not to drive across country. I found a company that will ship my truck to LA for $895 and from LA to Hilo, HI for $946. That's a heck of a lot less than the $2800+ quotes I had been getting from some of the larger moving companies!

Mine is the black+tan(2000 Limited). Its the only complant about the hole truck. I like the idea of the XL bumpers, no plastic. I can find out tommorow about the price on the side molding. Got a good friend who`s the manager of a ford dealer near me, that`s how I got this one. Sounds like a great price on the transport,But I had a vision of a convoy of X`s heading west on 90, riding into the sunset.....................OK it`s late

I was also interested in going with the monochrome look. A while back I called the parts department at the dealer to find out how much the replacement cladding on the bumpers were. He told me new plastic cladding for the bumpers was only available in tan or gray. I inquired about the monochrome bumpers and he said they come completely primered but unpainted.

Monsta, I just got the call back on No Bound package. The bumpers are ,get this, list $1100, and the body clading( fender lips and 4 door pieces) are $1100. He will sell at cost, half that. Still cheaper to paint. Got a buddy that will do it for the cost of the paint and beer .

My plot is to get rid of the plastic crap > at least on the rear bumper anyways.

I had a pneumatic bumper on my dearly departed bronco. It had pneumatic fitting for an air hose which I used for tools and it also had a dandy pressure gage. It also provided damage control when a 10 ton truck rear ended me on the 401 in toronto.

My guess is that as long as the plastic is not damaged and you can find paint that will stick.... go for it.

Dave.

It`s not hard. The trick is soaking the pieces to get all of the armor all out of them. Then scuff and use enough flex agent.

My SSV Excursion does not come with the lower trim and I think it looks better that way. Can't help on getting it off though.

Even if you have a ding in your bumper, don't buy a replacement. Sandblast the chrome off, sand the outer surfaces, and simply fill the imperfections. While you're at it, blast the backsides, too, and paint to prevent rusting. Use a quality primer. You're going to cover the bumper with paint, so why buy new pieces? And from what I've read here, you have to get the new pieces painted anyway.

The costly part about going monochromatic is the plastic grille shell. A body shop has to use a different type of primer (AFTER removing the chrome) that won't soften the plastic, AND will help resist stone chips.

Body trim panels? Paint 'em!
