I am looking to buy the newer style cup holders for my 2000 Excursion. I understand the newer ones hold the drink better?

Yes, you are correct. On the newer model they are deep like the ones in the rear. I bought mine for $20-$30 dollars and now I can actually use my cup holder "While" I drive.
One of the best interior mods!

Was the new cup holders for the console or the dash ones? How did you take the old ones out?

I replaced the console one, the one I assumed you were referring to. All you have to do is grab hold and pull it straight up, it just snaps into place.

Another great mod I found at the parts department of one of our local [Los Angeles area] is a trash 'can' that fits in one of the cup holders like a large mug. It comes in two colors. Gray and brown. If I recall, it cost about $5.00. Seeing as I have tan leather interior I chose the brown and it matches the dark color of the console. As long as my passenger doesn't need two cup holders it works great. It is right where you want it when you need it. It also has a hinged snap lid to keep things inside.
